Saturday Racing Tips: Huge Ayr and Newbury Preview, April 18th 2026

Saturday Racing Tips from Ayr and Newbury

Dave Massey tipped 28/1 winner Run to Freedom at Newmarket on Thursday and after a successful Craven Meeting is back with his Saturday Racing Tips ahead of a huge day of racing at Ayr and Newbury.

Saturday Racing Tips: Huge Ayr & Newbury Preview

I like the chances of one at a big price here, as his form appears rock-solid yet has been somewhat overlooked in the early markets, and that’s Caughtinyourtrance (1.45).

Saturday Racing Tips: Caughtinatrance (Ayr, 1.45)

It’s been a while since trainer Jimmy Moffatt has had a winner but that’s not a worry as he isn’t a winter trainer anyway (it was much the same last season) and Caughtinyourtrance does look like he’s being prepared with a spring and summer campaign in mind. It could be Cartmel  is the end destination for him, as is so often the case for one of Jimmy’s, but I can’t resist him at a price here.

Essentially he comes here unexposed after just the two starts over fences but he’s already shown himself very much at home over the bigger obstacles, a solid second at Newcastle followed up by an even better third at Uttoxeter, beaten just three lengths by two fast-improving novices in As Legends Have It and Daytime Dreaming. The handicapper has left him alone, always a plus, and the step back up to three miles should be to his benefit too. Looks terrific each-way value with the extra places on offer.

Saturday Racing Tips: Twistthenightaway (Ayr, 2.55)

A race I want to play in, possibly with more than the one, as I want to take on likely favourite World Of Fortunes here. She didn’t need to be at her best to score at Kelso last time once favourite Hollygrove Cha Cha bowed out of it, and more pertinently, they’re trying to get 7lb off her back today by using an amateur, Ross Sugrue. Ross is 0-17 under Rules in Ireland this year and just 1-45 overall, which hardly inspires confidence today.

The improving Twistthenightaway (2.55) has plenty going for her. She got her handicap mark by running over shorter trips, but as soon as she went up in trip, she improved, winning back to back handicaps at Newcastle and last time out at Bangor, getting the better of the game but sadly ill-feted Classic Concorde a length. She’s not going up by much as she isn’t winning by big distances, is proven with cut, and can improve again.

Pinot Rouge is one of those mares that’s going to pop up at a big price soon, and I want to be on when she does. She was still in with every chance when coming down in the four-mile Hexham marathon last time out, but returns to hurdles today. Her form is patchy, to say the very least, but capable if she fancies it, so have a small saver at a whopping price.

Saturday Racing Tips: Isaac Des Obeaux (Ayr, 3.35)

I was a bit cross with myself for not giving Isaac Des Obeaux more of a shout in the Midlands National last time, as for some while I’ve thought he looked a proper stayer but I just thought he’d already found his level and in truth, was a little disappointing. Turns out that all he wanted was a marathon trip, as he dotted up from Rock My Way, with Git Maker, reopposing here, back in third. He’s been put up 7lb for that, but that looks nowhere near enough, and as long as he’s over those exertions – and it was a gruelling race, only the four finished – I think he’ll win another National today.

Saturday Racing Tips: Spring Cup at Newbury (3:10)

I think I’ll have a couple onside in the 26-runner Spring Cup, if that’s alright with you… For a big-field handicap there’s not a lot of pace on here, and with that I think Jimmy Speaking (3.10), at the foot of the handicap, could form the arrowhead up the middle of the track, drawn as he is in stall 12. He’s a horse that I don’t think we’ve seen the best of yet, I remember seeing him at two and thinking he was one that needed plenty of time, and he impressed when making all at Doncaster last time, one of only a few that was able to do so on the weekend.

For all this is tougher, a step back up to a mile might well see more improvement. Another with a good chance is Hand Of God (3.10) – who looked a horse to keep following when winning the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot back in 2024, but we didn’t see him again after that for the best part of a year, and his season was done by July, suggesting he simply wasn’t right. Connections keep the faith, and whilst a drop to a mile might not be ideal at first glance, he isn’t short of speed. Don’t give up on him just yet.
