The new tennis season is already up and running and on Sunday the first Grand Slam of the campaign, the Australian Open 2025, begins in Melbourne. There’s a new era of tennis with the Nadal, Federer, Murray and Djokovic era coming to an end, with new pretenders ready to ascent to the top table of tennis.
Australian Open 2025: Comprehensive Guide
The Australian Open is the first major tennis tournament of the year and takes place on the hard courts of Melbourne Park each January. Jannik Sinner is the defending men’s singles champion while Aryna Sabalenka has won the women’s singles crown in each of the last two years. There are also doubles and mixed doubles competitions while junior and wheelchair players compete in singles and doubles tournaments, too.
Recent Australian Open History
Founded back in 1905, the Australian Open is an established part of the tennis calendar and is one of the sport’s four Grand Slams along with the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. The tournament was played on grass until 1987 but became a hardcourt event in 1988 when it moved to its current home, Melbourne Park.
Last year was the first time in the tournament’s history that the Australian Open had begun on a Sunday – it had previously started on a Monday – and that will again be the case in 2025. Jannik Sinner claimed the men’s singles title last year, recovering from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in the final to claim his first Grand Slam crown.
Novak Djokovic had won four of the previous five editions prior to Sinner’s success down under last year and the Serbian legend has won the men’s title at the Australian Open a record 10 times. Aryna Sabalenka has won the last two women’s singles titles with Sofia Kenin, Naomi Osaka and the now-retired Ashleigh Barty also winning at Melbourne Park since 2020
