Darts professional Dave Chisnall reflects on the last few days of Players Championship action in Wigan, and looks forward to next week’s World Grand Prix in Leicester. Read on for Chizzy’s exclusive thoughts ahead of next week’s major.
Dave Chisnall: Swiss Darts Open
It was a disappointing trip to Switzerland last week, losing in the first round to my good pal Nathan Aspinall on Saturday. I was the second to last game of the day, which meant a lot of hanging about during the day, something that always sort of takes me off my stride.
But no excuses, Nathan played really well and I didn’t show up for the first few legs. That’s the standard of the game at the minute. If you don’t turn up, you get punished.
Dave Chisnall: Players Championship in Leicester
Wigan was good, despite a couple of near-misses over the week, and getting close on a couple of days. I lost out to Andrew Gilding on the Wednesday, with him taking out 121 on the bull with me sat on a nice two-dart finish.
Thursday, I should have beaten Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals, when missing some rubbish darts to go 5-3 up. He battled back well to win the next few and I lost the deciding leg despite some heavy scoring. Luke is a class act, and it’s easy to see why he’s the man to beat in the game of darts at the minute.
Dave Chisnall: World Grand Prix 2024
Leicester was a good move for The World Grand Prix, with The Citywest in Dublin a bit isolated – despite my results there. I went on a great run in the double in/double out format, reaching at least the quarters four years on the spin and losing to Michael Van Gerwen in the 2019 final.
My scoring gets all the attention when it comes to my game, but when my doubles are on they’re generally pretty decent. You don’t win tournaments otherwise. I haven’t had the best record since the move away from Dublin, losing in the first round the last couple of years, but my game feels in good nick at present and I’m looking forward to it.
I play Cam Menzies in the first round, and haven’t looked beyond that. Some players look at the brackets and draw and work out all the permutations etc, that isn’t me. I turn up and play my game and move on. Fingers crossed I’m doing next week’s diary, whilst preparing for another World Grand Prix Quarter-Final!
Take it easy, Chiz x
