Dave Massey is back with his weekend racing tips ahead of a busy afternoon north at Carlisle and Beverley.
Horse Racing Tips: Beverley and Carlisle, May 30th 2026
Havana Rum (2.00) will be delighted this has been moved from Haydock to Carlisle, a track where he’s hit the frame three times from four starts, and he looked a winner in waiting after a terrific first effort of the season at Pontefract, beaten half a length by Arklow Lad in a race that’s working out very well already.
Weekend Racing Tips: Palmar Bau (Havana Rum, 2.00)
He wasn’t quite in the same form at Doncaster last time but perhaps did a bit too much too soon, not really his run style as he likes to come from off a strong pace. That looks pretty much guaranteed here, with Station X and Jordan Electrics likely to head the field, and it should pay to back him each-way. He’s fine on all ground, so won’t care if a bit of rain does come.
Weekend Racing Tips: Crest of Fire (Carlisle, 3.45)
Crest Of Fire (3.45) just kept improving at two, taking good steps forward on each occasion, and looked to have done so again on his reappearance at Southwell, winning his maiden by no less than ten lengths. The second has run well in a good handicap since and the fourth a handicap winner off a mark of 68, and his new mark of 86 still looks more than workable. A stiff finish should suit him well, and having had a small break since the Southwell win, he comes here fresh. Will win more this year.
Weekend Racing Tips: Arapaho Gold (Beverley, 2.48)
Matteo is going to attract plenty of support after an easy 4¾l win on debut here, but just as impressive, if not more so, was Arapaho Gold (2.48), successful on debut at Thirsk at the start of the month, overcoming clear greenness to win 2½ lengths, strong at the finish. Second home Kodiac Breeze beat a big field in a maiden at Redcar next time, giving the form a solid enough look, and as a somewhat unusual first time out winner from Michael Dods, you’d imagine he’s only going to keep improving. Bred to be quick, I really like his chances in the Two Year Old Trophy.
Weekend Racing Tips: Dance Time (Chester, 2.53)
Dance Time (2.53) shaped nicely here last time out, never put into the race in anger but stayed on in eye catching fashion to be beaten 5½ lengths over a trip too short under a claiming rider. The booking of Hector Crouch takes the eye now she goes back up in trip, which will suit, and she’s fared pretty well with the draw, stall 6 (in a field of 11) probably fine. The combination will need to pick their way through and the usual Chester caveats about needing some luck in the run apply, but she’s capable of a big showing if it drops right.
Weekend Racing Tips: Palmar Bau (Chester, 3.30)
A race I really want to play, as there’s no doubt local hero Roman Dragon is going to be overbet on course after his narrow victory here last time out, enhancing his already excellent course record. However, that was over six furlongs, which is probably as far as he wants to go, and this seventh might just test his stamina strings to the limit.
Winning a handicap from marks north of 100 is never easy, but Palmar Bay (3.30) has the class to carry it off, and this drop back into handicap company after respectable efforts at Listed level this season might be just the ticket. His one and only run at Chester was in a similar handicap to this, and he won an easy 2½ lengths that day, so has no issue with conditions, and stall 5 is by no means the worst draw to work from. A confident pick to make his class tell.
