There’s group 1 action on the flat both sides of The English Channel, but there’s also tremendous jumps racing action and we have Cheltenham Races Tips for those having a punt at Prestbury Park this weekend.
Cheltenham Races Tips: Super Saturday Preview
There were plenty of familiar faces in the winners’ enclosure on Friday with Dan and Harry Skelton enjoying doubles, and winners elsewhere for local trainers Nigel Twiston-Davies and Henry Daly – and further success expected for such locally-trained sorts on Saturday.
Cheltenham Races Tips: Weveallbeencaught (1.10)
While 2m4f might be on the sharp side for Weveallbeencaught in this novice handicap chase, he is eventually going to prove himself to be chucked in and now might be the type to catch him. This horse was highly regarded enough to be the Nigel Twiston-Davies yard’s first string in the 3m novice chase at this meeting last season at the expense of Broadway Boy, who is now rated 149.
He was a good third behind that horse and two-time Stayers’ Hurdle winner Flooring Porter that day, but is down to a mark of 128 after failing to match that level of performance since. However, there was more promise from Weveallbeencaught on his stable debut for Christian Williams at Worcester last month and that would have removed any rustiness. First-time cheekpieces are applied in a bid to sharpen him up and Williams is 25 per cent with such runners. A bold and aggressive performance from the front is anticipated.
Cheltenham Races Tips: Pepe le Moko (2.20)
The classy Broadway Boy is a warm enough favourite for this 3m1f handicap chase, but there may be something better handicapped lurking and Pepe Le Moko stands out for Jane Williams off a feather weight. Pepe Le Moko has improved his Racing Post Rating with every start over fences despite the fact he was a beaten favourite on his final run of last season.
His finishing effort lacked inspiration that day, but that was at a time when Williams’ runners were badly underperforming due to the effects of rapeseed oil crops in a neighbouring yard affecting the horses. He was previously a wide-margin winner at Kempton and gives the impression there is a fair amount of improvement left in him over this new distance, and Williams landed a similar contest with a seasonal debutant at Exeter on Tuesday.
Cheltenham Races Tips: Gowel Road (2.50)
Nigel Twiston-Davies has made a bright start to the season and Gowel Road can keep up the good work in the first Pertemps qualifier of the campaign. In three starts at Cheltenham over 2m5f and beyond, Gowel Road has won an 11-runner handicap hurdle and finished seventh and sixth in a Coral Cup and Pertemps Final.
This horse was sent off a 10-1 shot for the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle last season after a cracking fourth in the 3m handicap hurdle on Betfair Chase day, but unsurprisingly struggled in company that hot at Ascot. He has slipped to a winnable mark and is still quite unexposed as a three-miler. With a reasonable record and fresh and respectable form on a sound surface, Gowel Road can go well at a nice price.
