Trainer Ross Burdon is back with another update, looking at last week’s runners and another eye on potential movers and shakers at the Horses in Training sale. Read his latest update each and every week with kwiff.

Ross Burdon Racing: Huge Nov 2025 Update

Where last week was an extremely positive one for the yard, with a winner and two placed horses from just the three runners, this week has been a frustrating one. Crest of Light went to Wolverhampton on Monday evening where he stepped up in trip to almost a mile and a quarter, a move I was sure would see him in better light than when he disappointed at Nottingham recently over a mile.

While Jack Mitchell felt the step up in trip did indeed suit, Crest of Light again jumped very slowly and missed the break, forcing Jack to attempt to thread a route from the back of the pack once they started the turn for home. Crest did pass some rivals, eventually finishing seventh of the eleven runners. This is likely to be the horse’s final start for us, he is in the Tattersalls November online sale and while he has obvious ability, I imagine his owners will let him move on.

Ross Burdon Racing: Night Arc

Tuesday was a day of very mixed emotions, our first intended runner of the day, Night Arc, who was a very short priced favourite to follow up his win last week, was withdrawn by the racecourse veterinary team at Lingfield. Night Arc is a horse who always moves averagely until he’s had a proper warm up and, despite us supplying evidence to the on course team that the horse warms up well and providing a letter from our yard vet confirming this, the vets at Lingfield weren’t convinced he was sound enough to take his chance.

Whilst we respect the decision of the racecourse vets, it’s incredibly frustrating on our part that we have done all we can to prove the horses soundness to race, only to be told we can’t line up. Having made his debut for the yard the week previous, a winning one at that, we now have to try and ensure we can satisfy the racecourse vets of his suitability to race before we can get the horse back on track.

Ross Burdon Racing: Our Ernie

The day ended on a much better note, with Ernie’s Valentine running another solid race under Phoebe Edwards to snatch second almost on the line at Wolverhampton where he stepped back up to a mile and half a furlong.

They way Ernie finished proved that he probably needs at least a mile these days and I’m quite keen to try him over a little bit further and see if he’ll stay ten furlongs. Phoebe and Ernie have developed a good partnership, with a win and two placings from their three racecourse appearances together and it’s great to see Ernie enjoying his racing again after a somewhat low-key start to his time with the yard.

Ross Burdon Racing: High Point

High point was also an intended runner this week, he was declared to run at Nottingham yesterday where he would’ve stepped up to two miles for the first time, but with extremely heavy rain hitting the midlands on Tuesday evening and through the night, the meeting was abandoned due to a waterlogged track.

Again this is frustrating, for a horse who wants plenty of cut in the ground we have waited a long time for the conditions to come right for him, only to have now run out of time to run again on grass this year. I’m not convinced he enjoys racing on the all-weather, something his form would also suggest, so we may pop him over some poles and tyres and see if he enjoys jumping, with a view to running in novice hurdle races this winter.
