Manchester United Class of 92 – Where Are They Now?
In recent years, the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have progressed through the Manchester United academy and starred for the first team.
However, there has arguably been no greater success story for academy graduates than the infamous “Class of 92”, where as many as seven players went onto have successful careers after breaking into the Red Devils side.
Below we look at each of these players and see how their careers panned out, as well as where their post-retirement lives have taken them.
Manchester United 1992 – Ryan Giggs
Welsh star Ryan Giggs is widely regarded as one of the greatest wingers of all-time, with his pace and trickery causing a host of issues for opposition defenders during his 24 year career at United.
Giggs is one of the most decorated footballers in the history of the sport with 35 club honours and is one of just 44 players to make over 1000 career appearances.
After retiring in 2014, the 50-year-old spent time as assistant and interim manager of the Red Devils and was most recently in charge of the Welsh national side in 2020.
Manchester United 1992 – Paul Scholes
Another man who spent his entire professional career at Old Trafford, Paul Scholes everything during his 19 year career at the club.
The central midfielder has moved into punditry since he hung up his boots in 2013, regularly appearing on Sky Sports and on various podcasts, while he also co-owns League Two side Salford City – alongside Giggs, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers (Gary and Phil).
Manchester United 1992 – David Beckham
Arguably the most well-known of the group – in part due to his high-profile marriage with Posh Spice Victoria Beckham – David Beckham is heralded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation as well as one of the best free-kick takers of all-time.
Becks has also delved into the club ownership industry since retiring in 2013, buying Inter Miami, while he is also known for his philanthropic works with UNICEF since becoming an ambassador in 2005
Manchester United 1992 – Gary Neville
Gary is the older of the Neville brothers and also had the more successful career at United, making over 600 appearances between 1992 and 2011.
After a disappointing managerial spell with Valencia, Neville is now a regular pundit and co-commentator for Sky Sports, known for his work alongside Jamie Carragher, while he also hosts The Overlap podcast alongside many other former pros.
Manchester United 1992 – Phil Neville
While his time at United was much shorter – leaving the club for Everton in 2005 – Phil Neville also enjoyed a very successful career, winning 14 trophies in total.
The 47-year-old has since enjoyed managerial spells with Inter Miami and England Women – guiding the Lionesses to a fourth-place finish in the 2019 World Cup – and is currently in charge of MLS outfit Portland Timbers.
Manchester United 1992 – Nicky Butt
Nicky Butt left Old Trafford in 2004, having won 15 trophies and appearing more than 380 times for the Red Devils.
He hung up his boots in 2011 after spells with Newcastle, Birmingham City and South China and, while he remains part-owner of Salford City, he stepped down as CEO in October to pursue more coaching opportunities.
Manchester United 1992 – Robbie Savage
While he may have been part of the same youth team, Robbie Savage was not able to make the same step-up to the United first team and left the club in 1994 for Crewe Alexandra having failed to make a senior appearance.
The outspoken Welshman still enjoyed a successful career, making over 600 appearances for the likes of Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.
Savage is currently in charge of non-league Macclesfield, while he also features regularly as a co-commentator for major networks.
