Manchester United will be hoping for a brighter future under new boss Ruben Amorim and player recruitment will have a big say in what the Red Devils can achieve under the Portuguese manager. The club is desperate for stability after a decade of inconsistency in both the dressing room and at executive level.
Man Utd Transfer Flops: 5 Players Stealing a Living Post Sir Fergie
The January transfer window is fast approaching, but as much as United will look to add to their squad, Amorim may be better served by finding new clubs for some disappointing performers. We take a look at five players who stole a living at Manchester United in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Man Utd Transfer Flops: Antony
Antony joined Manchester United in August 2022, but there is certainly no recency bias in his selection. The Brazilian signed a five-year contract for a whopping £82 transfer fee and he has proved a spectacularly bad signing since making the move from Ajax.
The 24-year-old has contributed only five goals and three assists in 56 Premier League appearances and the ten yellow cards he has been shown outstripes those tallies combined. Despite the poor return, Antony’s lack of understanding that flicks and tricks might not be appropriate at this stage of his Man Utd career, continues to amaze.
Man Utd Transfer Flops: Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho appeared a player of huge promise when Manchester United signed the England forward from Borussia Dortmund, but the £73m signing failed to get anywhere near expectations. The 24-year-old scored only nine goals in 58 appearances for United and the Londoner was another player who appeared unable to grasp what was required to resurrect his Red Devils career.
Man Utd Transfer Flops: Mason Mount
Another abysmal signing, Mason Mount arrived for £55m from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and the England man has barely put on a United shirt since. It was a puzzling addition, given that Mount operates in the same position as Bruno Fernandes, but even still, the Red Devils would have hoped that their investment would yield more than 19 appearances and one goal.
Man Utd Transfer Flops: Donny van de Beek
Donny van de Beek’s failure at Manchester United was perhaps not all his own doing, but the £40m arrival for Ajax was contracted to the Red Devils for four years and made only 35 appearances for United. The Dutchman could never force himself into a regular starting position, and after loan spells at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt, the 27-year-old joined Girona earlier this year.
Man Utd Transfer Flops: Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria continues to enjoy an excellent career, but his time at Old Trafford will not be remembered fondly. The Argentine joined Manchester United, for what was at the time a British record transfer fee, and the £59.7m arrival failed to deliver on that investment. Di Maria made only 27 appearances for United, before calling time on his stay in Manchester and the transfer cost, signing on fee and wages were nothing but a complete waste of money.
