Ruth Jefferson: Reflective Mood after 2024/2025 Season

Group 1 winning trainer Ruth Jefferson is back with kwiff to discuss near-misses at Ayr and Perth, and upcoming plans for a couple of exciting novices.

Ruth Jefferson: Reflective Mood after 2024/2025 Season

We’ve not spoken since The Diva was about to run on Scottish National Day at Ayr, and it was great to see her run a blinder to finish second. The trip to three miles has definitely seen her improve and she followed-up her Listed success at Kelso with a game effort to finish second behind Tom Lacey’s The Lord Maid.

The most pleasing thing from our perspective is that the winner didn’t pull away after the last and Lavida Adiva kept on galloping She has just missed one in the straight and she did well to recover and finish as close as she did. She’s won 45k in prize-money and has been a real flagbearer when some of our higher profiles have struggled with niggles. She’s only a 6yo and will be back next season.

Ruth Jefferson: Mighty Maple

Another flagbearer in some fashion has been Maple, who has finished runner-up in four of his eight starts since joining us from the yard of Sir Michael Stoute. I thought he had won at Perth yesterday evening (it would have made getting 3 hours sleep after the trip there a bit better) when jumping the last in front, but he hasn’t quite figured out how to win, bless him.

His seconditis isn’t through a lack of genuineness either, and he’s been a great addition to the team here winning £15k in prize money since joining the yard. Not many horses will have done that running in the north as a juvenile. The winner got a good ride, and we live to fight another day.

Ruth Jefferson: 2024/2025 Season

That’s 12 winners for the season, including one at listed level, building on 8 the season prior. I’m hoping we can keep building and have done well in spite of a bit of bad luck. Losing Hashtag Boum and Kerryhill were real tough ones to take, and Sounds Russian, a winner at Listed level last season, hasn’t been 100% all season.

Nevertheless, we will keep on fighting and will probably have a few runners next season; it would be nice to hit the ground running. Loveatfirstglance missed her intended engagement at Cheltenham last week because I thought the ground was just a bit dead. She will probably go to Hexham, where we hope to win a Bumper and then have her done for the season.

At Uttoxeter, we may run Cindy (Giveupyerauldsins) in a 3m Handicap Chase, and Go Go Chicago could be out again after a good second last time out at Kelso. Both ran really well in defeat last time out and can hopefully go one better. We’re very lucky to have a great team here at Newstead Cottage Stables, our Head Lass Tina celebrates 25 years this summer, and long may it continue into next season and beyond.
