Ruth Jefferson: Newcastle Success
It’s been an up and down week, with us saddling two at Newcastle and Mobile Mamma leading home a 1-2 for the yard in Monday’s 3m Novices’ Handicap Chase from Cindy (Giveupyerauldsins) and both running brilliantly.
I thought Jamie (Hamilton) gave Mamma a really great ride, and made her mind up at a lot of the fences. When we schooled her over hurdles, she didn’t have the ‘enthusiasm’ you would want from a horse, but we always thought she would improve over fences. She would back off a little, and at the same time was a bit keen, so jumping properly over fences has killed two birds with one stone.
Cindy (Giveupyerauldsins) has to be ridden a bit differently, and I thought Richie (McLernon) gave her a good ride in defeat. He rode her to pick up if Mama didn’t stay three miles, but fortunately it ended out well. I wouldn’t mind dropping Mama back to 2m 6f, whilst Cindy will probably stay over three miles or even further. Both have come out of the race well, and both will probably be out again before the end of the season.
Ruth Jefferson: Battle Scars
It’s not been a great week for us physically, having taken a tumble riding out on Monday, and making it worse thereafter. I spent six and half hours in A&E and it turns out that I fractured a vertebrae at the top of my spine, as well damaging my ribs and my teeth. That being said, I’ll still be at Aintree on Saturday to see Sounds Russian in the G1 Liverpool Hurdle. You’re supposed to do as little as possible for the first two weeks and it’s supposed to take six weeks to heal, so fingers crossed we’re on the mend soon.
Ruth Jefferson: Sounds Russian
Bruce (Sounds Russian) was entered in both the G1 Liverpool Hurdle and the opening 3m Handicap Hurdle at Aintree on Saturday. He would have been carrying top weight and conceding upwards of 5lb to a 20+ runner field isn’t his cup of tea. We’re happy to chance our arm in a Grade 1 with good prize money all the way down. Any further rain would help.
Ruth Jefferson: Go Co Chicago
He runs under a penalty after winning for former connections, but Go Go Chicago is in good form and heads to Kelso on Monday. He runs for the Paul Hanagan syndicate, and would be running in handicaps.. Except there are no races! If there were a) races and b) rain we’d probably be running 75% of the yard the next couple of weeks because they’re in good nick, but it is what is is. He goes there in good form, and has raced better than his finishing position suggest. Jamie Hamilton rides and he has a good chance.
