On Grand National Day itself, the supporting card includes the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, the Liverpool Hurdle and the Maghull Novices’ Chase – making up a tally of 11 Grade 1 races over three days.

 

Who won the Grand National in 2024?

 

The latest running of the race went to I Am Maximus for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend in the famous silks of owner JP McManus as he powered home to win by more than seven lengths from Delta Work.

 

It was Mullins’ second winner after Hedgehunter in 2005, Townend’s first time bagging the race and the third time a McManus-owned horse had won after famous successes for Don’t Push It in 2010 – the only time legendary rider AP McCoy won the race – and Minella Times in 2021 – when Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the race.

 

Who are the The Grand National 2025 favs?

 

I Am Maximus is favourite to retain his crown in 2025. He had already won an Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse in 2023 and his win in this race was his first start at Aintree. He will be a nine-year-old come the spring of 2025 and could be set to create a Grand National legacy.

 

Intense Raffles for trainer Tom Gibney succeeded I Am Maximus in the Fairyhouse feature and could be an Aintree contender next time around. Kim Bailey’s Chianti Classico and Iroko for Jonjo O’Neill are some of the best British-based contenders, while Three Card Brag and Monty’s Star are possible runners for Gordon Elliott and Henry De Bromhead respectively – both trainers with past success in the race.
