PGA Tour Golf Tips: John Deere Classic 2024

John Deere Classic 2024

The John Deere Classic 2024 is the latest stop on the PGA Tour, with several players stepping up their preparations for the Open Championship later this month.

Austria’s Sepp Straka won this event last year to claim his second victory in the US and will be back in Illinois to defend the title. We have come up with three selections to consider for this week’s tournament, which will be the 53rd edition of this event.

John Deere Classic 2024: Denny McCarthy to win @ 17.20

Back-to-back sixth-placed finishes at TPC Deere Run will stand Denny McCarthy in good stead going into this year’s tournament. The man from Maryland is still seeking his first win on the PGA Tour, having turned professional back in 2016.

McCarthy has been enjoying one of his most consistent years on Tour, missing the cut just twice in 17 events with one of those coming at the PGA Championship. He has two top-10 finishes and five top-30 spots this season and carded four sub-70 rounds in his last outing, when he finished T31 at the Travelers Championship last month.

McCarthy is ranked second for strokes gained putting in the PGA stats and in an event where the winning score has been -21 in three of the last four years, the flat stick could be crucial this week. A second-round 64 last year proves he can go low on this course, with the 31-year-old eventually finishing five shots behind winner Straka.

John Deere Classic 2024: Seamus Power to win @ 35.00

Seamus Power is another player who took last week off to work on his game, prior to travelling to Illinois. The Irishman finished the Travelers Championship on a high, with a final round 63 helping him claim a T20 finish in Connecticut.

It seems to have been a case of either missing the weekend or challenging in recent months, with Power’s form-line for the last seven events reading T12-CUT-T16-CUT-T27-CUT-T20. The 37-year-old will have good memories of last year’s John Deere Classic, when he finished in a tie for 13th on 16-under-par. The highlight of that week was a final-round 64.

John Deere Classic 2024: Nate Lashley Top-10 Finish @ 8.30

As big as 81.00 to win the tournament, Nate Lashley will feel like he can have a big week at TPC Deere Run having shown some good signs in recent weeks. During April and May, the world number 121 missed three cuts out of four tournaments but he looks to have turned a corner since then.

Lashley carded a final round 66 at the Canadian Open to finish T42 and then scored a 10-under-par 278 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic for top-25 spot. A first-round 65 put him in the upper echelons of the leaderboard in this event last year. He followed that up with rounds of 69-68-69 to finish T21, eight shots behind the winner. Lashley ranks 80th in putting this season and a better week on the greens can see him collect a healthy cheque again in Illinois.
