Chester May Meeting 2026 Day 1 Preview

Final Appeal (1.30) is the one that makes the most appeal here. A solid debut effort was followed up by a ready win at Wolverhampton last time, and second home Noble Raider ran well enough at Newmarket in what looked a good little race to make you think the form is solid. He’s clearly going the right way, and having won at Wolverhampton, has already shown he handles a bend.

Chester May Meeting Day 1 Tips: Final Appeal (1:30)

That’s not the case with likely favourite Adonius, twice a winner at Musselburgh so far, and made quite hard work of landing short odds under a penalty last time. Third home Ponte Carlo was unsighted at Beverley on Monday and the form does not look strong.  Wait Geordie is the other the market likes. He won readily enough at Bath but again, the form isn’t particularly strong, and all told it’s Final Appeal that looks the one to be with.

Chester May Meeting Day 1 Tips: Snow Master (2:05)

The more you look at this the more you come back to the front of the market, with Snow Master and Percy’s Lad looking the two to concentrate on.  Snow Master (2.05) steps back into handicap company after seeing the back end of Zeus Olympios a couple of times last year, far from disgraced on either run, and a mark of 100 looks more than fair in this exposed company. The only concern would be a slow start could put him on the back foot, but he’s the one here that could simply be better than a handicapper, and having been gelded since last seen, we could see a much improved model.

Percy’s Lad was a certainly to rock up here after his pipe-opener at Newmarket last month where he showed plenty of speed and verve to lead them a fair way before fading. The handicapper saw fit to drop him 4lb for that, which looks quite generous; twice a winner here, he barely knows how to run a poor one around the Roodeye and should Snow Master misfire, he’ll be there to pick up the pieces. Wouldn’t be putting you off the reverse forecast here.

Chester May Meeting Day 1 Tips:: Water to Wine (3:05)

Benvenuto Cellini has to give 4lb and race-fitness away to Water To Wine here and that swings the vote in favour of John Gosden’s exciting prospect, who won with any amount in hand on debut at Newbury last month. The market knew it was coming too, well backed in to even money at the off, and in beating Alderman 4½ lengths recorded a very good time figure too.

Benvenuto Cellini kept improving at two and finished off with a very credible third in the Futurity at Doncaster, for all that came on heavy ground, and will be a tough cookie to try and break if fit, but that can’t be taken as a given.

Chester May Meeting Day 1 Tips: Crimson Spirit (4:45)

Before you go piling in on the low-drawn horses here, bear in mind the first three home in this last year came from stalls 11, 8 and 10, so a high draw isn’t necessarily a disadvantage. Which is just as well, as it’s the Kubler’s Crimson Spirit (4.45), drawn 12, that makes a fair bit of appeal here.  He came to hand very early last year, needing just the one run at York to put him straight before winning three handicaps on the bounce.

He clearly comes to hand early in the season – his third at Newmarket in a big field looks a perfectly solid reappearance run (interestingly Percy’s Lad, who runs earlier on the card for the Kublers was also down the field in that race) and for a horse that knows how to win, he looks on a very fair mark of 87 for this. Some luck is going to be needed from his draw, but he should be a fair price, and worthy of each-way investment.
