Dave Chisnall: Austrian Darts Trophy 2026

It was an up-and-down couple of days in Hildesheim for the latest couple of days of Players Championship action, where I got to the Last 16 on Day 1, before out in the first round just 24 hours later.

I opened with a 6-3 defeat of Rhys Griffin and played some of the best darts of the season in a 6-4 defeat of Mario Vandenbogaerde in Round 2. The big difference was my finishing, and given the struggles I’ve had with doubles this year – it was typical and refreshing that I finished by taking out 100 with 20, Tops, Tops.

That game was much better than the 6-1 defeat of Martin Schindler an hour later oddly enough, despite the better scoreline. Martin wasn’t at the races, and I didn’t have to play great to beat him to be honest. The key aspect is the finishing, and if I can keep putting doubles away then I’ll have a fair bit more success this month and beyond.

May is a fantastic month to try and earn some ranking points and keep the taxman at bay at the same time. There’s three Pro Tour double-headers and three Euro Tour events. And given the fact a lot of the game’s best players are still juggling Premier League and the travel and schedule that entails with the media hype surrounding it too, we aren’t likely to have a better chance at getting lighter fields.

The problem is, the standard is so good these days and the kids coming through are at such a higher level than when I was first coming through 20 years ago – it really is a different ball game.

Dave Chisnall: Austrian Darts Trophy

I’ve got Cristo Reyes early on in tonight’s evening session, and a win against him would setup a game against my pal Damon Heta in the next round. Cristo is a very dangerous player and can score really heavily, so hopefully the trebles are firing in and I can advance passed the opening round.

Damo is another team-mate from Harrows and is a quality, quality player despite a poor run of form. He’s a class act and will come good before the end of the year. Hopefully I’m there against him on the Austrian stage on Saturday and give him a good go. May has started well, so fingers crossed for a bit of lady luck smiling on me this month and we might get up amongst the top 16 in the world again soon.
