Ascot Racing Tips: Exclusive Saturday Picks, October 5th 2024

Saturday Best Bets

Four of the eight races on ITV on Saturday are from Ascot, including two Group 3 contests and a big-field handicap – read on for our Ascot Racing Tips exclusive for kwiff readers . Our expert has come up with a selection in every race at the Berkshire venue. There’s good prize money on offer, attracting the usual suspects and the likes of trainers William Haggas, Andrew Balding and James Fanshawe all bidding to better their excellent records at the track.

Ascot Racing Tips: Relief Rally (1.50 Ascot)

Relief Rally is representing William Haggas, who is 8-43 (19%) in the past fortnight and 47-320 (15%) with his three-year-old runners on this course. Cieren Fallon is riding the daughter of Kodiac for the first time and Fallon is 112-545 (21% +£45.29) when riding for Haggas. The selection produced an excellent second of 26 over this course and distance in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot last year before going on to land the Super Sprint at Newbury and the Lowther Stakes at York.

She has raced three times this year and appeared to be coming back into form at the right time for this assignment when second in Newbury’s Group 3 World Trophy Stakes over this 5f trip on heavy ground last month. The slightly better surface should prove more suitable on this occasion.

Ascot Racing Tips: Hamish (2.25 Ascot)

William Haggas has two strong candidates for this prize in Al Aasy and Hamish. The more testing ground on the Round Course shouldn’t be an issue for either but slightly favours Hamish, who is 2-3 at this time of year whereas Al Aasy is 0-2 in early October.

There isn’t much in it, according to official or Racing Post Ratings (RPR), but Hamish is a slightly bigger price, won this prize in 2022, and is capable of doing so again if running to the level shown when second to Luxembourg in the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom at the end of May. His record in lesser company reads excellent, especially in small field sizes, and he is taken to get his head back in front now returning to calmer waters.

Ascot Racing Tips: Purosangue (3.00 Ascot)

Andrew Balding and David Probert combine through the improving three-year-old Purosangue, who registered an RPR of 112 when reaching a close second behind Quinault over this 6f trip on an easy surface in the Listed Garrowby Stakes at York last month. His previous best effort came when finishing well into a close second in the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown over 1f shorter on soft ground in July. The Aclaim colt is a major player if building on either of those efforts under suitable conditions.

Ascot Racing Tips: Fresh (3.35 Ascot)

James Fanshawe’s Fresh returned to winning ways at his beloved Ascot over 1f shorter on soft ground last month. The 2lb subsequent rise to a new rating of 95 is neither here nor there considering he landed a similar prize to this over this course and distance on good to soft ground from a 7lb higher mark of 102 in September 2022. The selection is 4-18 with six other placed efforts on this course and is a rock-solid each-way option in this 18-runner contest.
