Dave Massey is back with Newbury points ahead of a busy day of racing, on Super Saturday at Newbury and Kingmaker Chase Day at Warwick. Read his exclusive tips in his latest kwiff column.
Dave Massey Super Saturday Tips: Feb 7th 2026
Jubilee Alpha is going to be a popular choice with the punters after a couple of very good efforts on the figures at Cheltenham and Sandown, but she’s not really going forward and whether she can carry her weight in what promises to be near-bottomless ground, given she’s not the biggest in stature, is a worry for me.
Super Saturday Tips: Hollygrove Cha Cha (War, 1.15)
With Flying Fortune and La Pinsonniere both likely to need the run after absences, this might fall to Hollygrove Cha Cha, who is proven in heavy ground after seeing off the talented Bluey over fences at Exeter in December. The problem has been that, either side of that chase win, her jumping has been less than adequate at times and so we see her reverting to hurdles today. Her overall form leaves her a little short of Jubilee Alpha, but this ground could be a leveller and last year’s Jane Seymour winner can come out on top today.
Super Saturday Tips: Le Milos (War, 2.25)
This isn’t a column that tends to stick up the jolly old favourite that often, but value is value and when it looks the wrong price, you do have to have a bet. So with that, it’s Le Milos that looks the most likely winner, not just as he’s going to be well suited by conditions, but plenty of his opponents won’t be.
He comes here in good form after a second to Nocte Volatus at Sandown, the winner bouncing back to form, and the handicapper has sensibly left him on the same mark here. He won this off the same mark last year too, and the headgear that was on that day – which has been missing so far this season, but is back on today – probably helped him too. This looks like it might have been the target for some while, and with so much in his favour, you fancy he’s got to go very close.
Super Saturday Tips: Kyntara (New, 1:35)
Go back a couple of seasons and you’ll find Kyntara finishing second in this from a mark just a pound lower, and whilst it’s been patchy since then, to say the least, there are some good reasons for thinking he could go better today. Not least this soft/heavy ground, in which he has a full record according to Timeform of 12221222F (that fall coming in the Grade 1 Sefton, where he’d likely as not have been placed) and so far this season he’s not had his conditions.
Despite that, and looking like he’d need the run, his close fourth to Impose Toi at Aintree on his reappearance told us the engine was still very much intact, and he ran just as well when a three-length fifth to Titan Discovery at Cheltenham on his next start. Haydock last time was a disaster and it needs forgiving, but Haydock these days isn’t every horse’s cup of tea, whereas soft/heavy at Newbury very much is. Looks a cracking each-way wager and rates the bet of the day for me.
Super Saturday Tips: Lanesborough (New, 3:20)
The unexposed Let It Rain is going to be hard to beat if he handles this ground, that’s clear enough for even the most novice punter to see, but equally quotes of around 11-4 do little to get the punting juices going. Instead, I’ll take two against him, one fairly obvious, one less so.
The obvious one is Lanesborough (3.20), who is only having his sixth handicap starts and may well appreciate a drop back in trip after perhaps finding the 2m5f of the Lanzarote too far at Kempton last time. That was still a good effort to be beaten just ten lengths by a back-to-form Iberico Lord, and he still looked both in form and still progressive. He’s no issues with heavy ground, Timeform calling it that when he won at Warwick earlier in the season, and trainer Ben Pauling just keeps on churning out the winners.
The bigger priced one is Bucephalus (3.20), who is much more exposed and has no secrets from anyone, but has a good record at Newbury, two wins from three starts here, those successes coming in soft and heavy ground. A front-runner, he almost made those tactics pay off at Haydock last time, Serious Challenge picking him off late, but with third home Brentford Hope running well since, it looks decent form. Harriet Tucker gets on well with him and there’s a chance they might get left alone up front as a supposed non-threat to the principals; that could be dangerous, and Bucephalus looks worth chancing at 28-1 and bigger too.
