Galway Plate Day 2024: Who Wins One of Ireland’s Biggest and Best Handicaps?

Galway Hurdle

The seven-day Galway Festival is definitely one of the highlights of the summer and Galway Plate Day 2024 offering a whopping €270,000 to the winner of this evening’s feature. It’s a fascinating race with an illustrious roll of honour and it’s one that every Irish trainer wants to win. Rather unsurprisingly all the big guns are represented and it should be a cracker.

Here we look at Wednesday’s main event and provide a tip for all seven races on the card. These include a potentially unexposed Gordon Elliott runner in the Galway Plate.

Galway Plate Day 2024: DON’TSTOPTHEMUSIC (4.50 Galway)

Ireland’s dominant force Willie Mullins is represented by three runners here but they could be worth taking on. Martin Brassil runs Don’tstopthemusic here and the seven-year-old was an impressive winner of a bumper at the Punchestown Festival in May. Very strong at the finish that day, 2m5f looks like a good starting point upon resuming his hurdles career and a big run is anticipated.

Galway Plate Day 2024: SO THEY TELL ME (5.25)

This is a competitive handicap hurdle with several lively candidates but Padraig Roche’s So They Tell Me could be the one to side with. Most of his previous hurdles efforts have been pretty underwhelming but his third at Limerick in October was solid enough. It was a completely different story when winning easily on handicap debut at Punchestown last month and the handicapper has responded with a 7lb rise. There could be loads of improvement still to come.

Galway Plate Day 2024: SHE’S A FINE WINE (6:00)

Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore are represented by She’s A Fine Wine here and the six-year-old is lightly raced over hurdles. She was victorious on handicap debut in a very competitive race at Ballinrobe in May and showed a good attitude to come out on top by half-a-length. A 6lb rise is perhaps a slight overreaction from the handicapper but it’s likely that she remains unexposed and further progress cannot be ruled out here.

Galway Plate Day 2024: MAN OF WORTH (6.40)

Man Of Worth still looked very green when second at Sligo last time out and he would have learnt plenty from that experience. We can expect a more professional performance this time around and this well bred son of Sea The Stars looks more than capable of going one better this time around.

Galway Plate Day 2024: ZANAHIYR (7.10)

The race of the day looks as fiercely competitive as ever so it could come down to small margins. Gordon Elliott believes Zanahiyr, who has had just four starts over fences, could be unexposed. It’s hard to disagree with that point of view as he has some rock-solid Grade 1 form over hurdles. This new trip is definitely an unknown quantity but he has the class to come out on top here.

Galway Plate Day 2024: AIR COMMANDER (7.45)

Aidan O’Brien’s Air Commander kept on well to win his maiden over 7f at Dundalk in April and has struggled a little in four handicap starts since. He was a reasonable third over a mile at Naas in May and he’d be entitled to go close off a 1lb lower mark here. A non-stayer over 1m1f last time out, the return to a mile is very likely to suit.

Galway Plate Day 2024: GOLDEN TEMPLE (8.15)

Golden Temple has been in fine form of late and has managed to win his last two starts over hurdles, which both came in impressive fashion. It was a similar story upon his return to the Flat at the Curragh last month and he was a game winner, shedding his maiden tag in this sphere in the process. Noel Meade’s four-year-old has been put up 6lb but he’s one to keep on side whilst in such good nick.
