Weekend Euro 2024 Preview: Scots can make history
It’s crunch time for both Scotland and Hungary, as the two nations meet at the MHPArena in Stuttgart on Sunday evening in Group A, with both sides needing a win to keep their last 16 hopes alive.
Scotland got their campaign off to the worst possible start just over a week ago, with that 5-1 thumping to hosts Germany. Before the tournament, Scotland boss Steve Clarke set his players the target of picking up four points from their three games and giving themselves a real chance of getting out of this group. That looked a long way away after their performance in the first game, Clarke said he’s “kicked backsides and given cuddles” ahead of their second game against Switzerland.
That seemed to do the trick, the Tartan Army put together a much better performance and earned their point on Wednesday night, their aim of getting four points is still on and they head into this showdown knowing that only a win will be good enough as they look to book their place in the knockout round of the European Championship for the first time in their history.
Weekend Euro 2024 Preview: Hungary For More
Hungary entered this tournament in fine form, the Magyars had lost just one in their last sixteen games before heading to Germany but Marco Rossi’s side just haven’t got going in this tournament. Having lost their first two games, the Hungarians find themselves at the foot of Group A but it’s not over just yet, a victory here would see them climb above the Scots and into third place. This is an uphill task for Hungary but made even more difficult given the fact that they haven’t won a game at a European Championship finals game since their win over Austria back in 2016, they’ll need.
Weekend Euro 2024 Preview: Stats
The last time these two nations met occurred back in 2018, with Scotland winning that friendly game 1-0, a game which also produced six cards. Dominik Szoboszlai has already picked up an assist in this tournament and he’s the man on all of Hungary’s set pieces, worth backing the Liverpool player here to provide another one. Both of these sides have seen both teams score in six of their last ten games, I think we’ll see the same in this one at a minimum.
Weekend Euro 2024 Preview: Swiss En Route
Switzerland look to have all but secured their place in the last sixteen thanks to their unbeaten start but a victory here would see the Red Crosses finish the group at the summit, resulting in a more favourable path through the tournament. The Swiss have qualified for the knockout stages of a European Championship in their last two attempts and the good news for Murat Yakin, is that Switzerland haven’t lost their final game at a major tournament in their last eight campaigns although their record against Germany isn’t great, a point will be enough here.
Weekend Euro 2024 Preview: Germany Expects
Germany have got their campaign off to the perfect start, back-to-back wins for Julian Nagelsmann’s side has not only put them into the last 16 with a game to spare but they’ve also got a chance to claim a 100% record in the group stage for just the second time at a European Championship, matching their success in the 2012 campaign.
As mentioned, the winner of this group will have a more favourable path in the tournament so the stakes are still high in this one, Germany would top the group with just a point which gives Nagelsmann a chance to experiment with some of those fringe players looking to prove a point. It’s likely he’ll wait to see how the game pans out before making those changes but it’s definitely a good position to be in.
Weekend Euro 2024 Preview: Form Lines
We could be in for a cracker here in Frankfurt, four of the last five games between these two sides have produced at least four games and both teams finding the back of the net, including their most recent outing in 2020, the UEFA Nations League game finished in a 3-3 thriller. It’s also worth noting that the Swiss have seen both teams on the scoresheet in their last five games at the euros.
