Premier League Best Bets: Matchday 11 Preview

It’s now eight Premier League away games without a win for Newcastle, a run going back to the tail end of last season, and they look skinny indeed at 2.2 here. They did win in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and pretty convincingly, but the sheer number of games appears to be causing a few problems in the North East and the Magpies enter the weekend a lowly 13th in the table.

Premier League Best Bets: Brentford v Newcastle

When they lost key players in the summer, Brentford were widely highlighted as potential relegation candidates and while no-one is safe after just 10 games, it’s fair to say they’ve been better than expected so far. Igor Thiago is a major reason for that – only Erling Haaland has scored more Premier League goals than the Bees’ centre forward.

Keith Andrews deserves plenty of credit for picking up the pieces after the departure of Thomas Frank – and the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard – and he’s so far orchestrated three wins from five at the Gtech Community Stadium, where only Manchester City have won this season. Aston Villa, Manchester Untied and Liverpool have already been beaten here and Newcastle could well go the same way.

Premier League Best Bets: Chelsea v Wolves

Enzo Fernandez is a player I’ve been keeping an eye on in the goalscorer markets for some time. He’s playing a lot further forward than he was when he first arrived at the club and that’s reflected by the fact he’s scored in four of his 10 starts in all competitions this season. In the Premier League alone, the Argentine World Cup winner sits fifth in the expected-goals list – behind only Erling Haaland, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Igor Thiago and Viktor Gyorkeres. As well as his runs into the box, Fernandez also takes penalties.

In this game, he faces the league’s worst defence, one which has conceded 3+ goals in five of 10 matches so far. OK, their situation has changed slightly since last weekend with Vitor Pereira sacked but no replacement has been named so that ‘bounce’ effect Wolves will be craving seems likely to be less with academy coaches in charge, rather than a new man to impress. The fact remains this is a poor Wolves side, one Chelsea – winners of six of their last eight games – should be able to overcome easily enough. And they did put four past them in the League Cup less than a fortnight ago…

Premier League Best Bets: West Ham v Burnley

Another man to catch the eye of late has been Quilindschy Hartman. He has four assists in his last five matches. And if you apply the ‘away’ filter, that becomes four in his last three. The Dutchman, signed from Feyenoord in the summer where he was a regular assist provider, has an eye for a pass from left-back, gets forward and also takes plenty of corners. The latter is notable given the problems West Ham have had defending set-pieces this season.

Yes, the Hammers improved last weekend as they beat Newcastle 3-1 but I’d be wary about declaring them problem-free after one result. Burnley have already beaten fellow bottom-five members Leeds and Wolves and, unlike their previous Premier League campaign, they are carrying a decent goal threat with Jaidon Anthony having already netted four times. West Ham have conceded 21 times in 10 games – that’s only one more than Wolves – so Hartman will get the chance to supply again, I’d suggest.

Premier League Best Bets: Palace v Brighton

A derby, of sorts, one which will feature two of the league’s most in-form strikers in Jean-Philippe Matata and Danny Welbeck. They are 2.15 and 3.15 respectively in the anytime scorer market but my preference is to turn to the shots prices. Yasin Ayari has now managed multiple shots in his last four appearances. Go back further and it becomes six of his last eight. For the record, he had one shot in both of the ‘misses’.

The Swedish midfielder loves to try his luck from distance and after four efforts from outside the box last week in a dominant win over Leeds, he can be expected to try something similar here against what could be a weary Palace after their Thursday night outing in Europe. Back him at around even money to have 2+ shots in this one.
