Premier League Best Bets

The Premier League 2024/2025 season is back with a bang! The first weekend of action is in the books with 18 of the 20 teams having now played and week one has had a familiar look about it.

Champions Manchester City had few problems dismissing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while their nearest pursuers from last season – Arsenal – opened with a solid home win over Wolves and some big clubs continued to toil. Here’s a look at some of the talking points from the first weekend of the Premier League

Premier League 2024/2025: Big 3 Points at Old Trafford

Manchester United and Everton got off to vastly different starts, with the Red Devils just about grabbing three points as Fulham visited Old Trafford while Everton were picked off by Brighton at Goodison Park. For both teams, it was a familiar pattern. Erik ten Hag’s United side struggled to break down Fulham and relied on a late goal from debutant Joshua Zirkzee to spare their blushes.

Everton’s final season at Goodison Park got off to a limp start as Brighton eased to a 3-0 win. It was a no-contest even before Ashley Young’s second-half red card and Sean Dyche will be acutely aware of the potential struggles ahead based on this showing. For both the Toffees and Red Devils, there doesn’t appear to be any great wind of change blowing after last season. Everton are 20th after their opening game and United are seventh. It’s early days of course but that could be the reality as the season grows.

Premier League 2024/2025: Arne Slots Right In

Liverpool are under new management and Arne Slot got a perfect start as they beat promoted Ipswich at Portman Road. The Reds lost too many duels in the first half – said their Dutch boss post-game – but they were polished in the second half as Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah scored a quick-fire double.

Following in the footsteps of Jurgen Klopp promises to be a tough task but Liverpool fans will be encouraged at Slot’s start, especially with the Anfield side yet to make any summer moves in the transfer market. The Tractor Boys showed more than enough in the opening hour to suggest they will be competitive and boss Kieran McKenna will know that there are less daunting challenges to come down the line – mind you, they do travel to Manchester City next.

Premier League 2024/2025: Chelsea Chaos

Talking of the Citizens, they made a perfect start with their 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Erling Haaland was amongst the goals and Pep Guardiola would have been more than satisfied with his lot. Talk of an ageing City squad is perhaps premature and any team hoping to claim the crown knows where the bar is set.

Enzo Maresca couldn’t get the better of his mentor in the dugout during his first Premier League game as a manager, with the Blues boss set for a period of bedding in after another summer of upheaval in West London. Raheem Sterling was omitted from the squad on Sunday and the Blues have a dilemma in regards to how to handle the forward after his team hastily posed their questions on the selection policy in public.
