Liverpool v Everton: 5 Players to see red in a Merseyside Derby

It’s often a feisty affair on the pitch and there have been 23 sending-offs between the two teams, with 16 of those being handed out to Everton. In this article, we look at five of the standout matches to feature red cards during the Premier League era.

Merseyside Derby Reds: Liverpool 0-1 Everton (September 1999)

One match that fans of both sides remember, more fondly the Evertonians, is the Blues 0-1 win at Anfield in 1999. No fewer than three players were given their marching orders, as Everton held on following an early goal to seal a rare win on the other side of Stanley Park.

Kevin Campbell scored at the Kop End after just four minutes to break the deadlock, but the second half supplied more drama. On 74 minutes, Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld and Everton striker Francis Jeffers were involved in a fight and were both shown red cards by Mike Riley. As the Reds tried desperately to get back on level terms, Steven Gerrard put in a high tackle on Campbell and became the third player to see red.

Merseyside Derby: Everton 1-3 Liverpool (December 2005)

Liverpool made the short journey to Goodison between Christmas and New Year in 2005 and were 2-0 up within the first 20 minutes. Peter Crouch and Steve Gerrard put the visitors in a strong position, before James Beattie reduced the deficit before half time.

Just two minutes after the break, Djibril Cisse restored the Reds’ two goal advantage and then Everton’s problems started to mount. Phil Neville was sent off on 68 minutes for a second yellow card and then Mikel Arteta followed him down the tunnel in stoppage time after also receiving a second yellow.

Merseyside Derby Reds: Liverpool 3-1 Everton (March 2006)

The return fixture in the 2005-06 season saw another two red cards, with Steven Gerrard picking up another Merseyside Derby dismissal. The Liverpool number eight was given his marching orders after just 18 minutes, after a reckless challenge on Kevin Kilbane saw him collect a second yellow card.

Despite having a man less, the hosts went 2-0 up with goals either side of half-time, before Tim Cahill pulled Everton back into the game on the hour mark. Andy Van der Meyde then became the second player to be dismissed, when Everton’s Dutch substitute was red carded for an elbow in an aerial challenge. Harry Kewell then sealed the three points with a third goal, firing in from the edge of the box, with just six minutes remaining.

Merseyside Derby Reds Liverpool 1-0 Everton (February 2010)

This was another derby with two red cards, with Liverpool again winning having been down to 10 men in the first half. Greek centre back Sotirios Kyrgiakos saw red after a lunge on Marouane Fellaini, but the home team took the lead 10 minutes into the second half, heading home a corner. As Everton got frustrated at their lack of a killer touch around the penalty area, Stephen Pienaar picked up a second yellow card.

Merseyside Derby Reds: Everton 1-1 Liverpool (April 1997)

Red cards were a bit less common during the Nineties, but there were two in this Goodison Park draw. Jamie Redknapp slid the ball home to put the visitors in front, before Duncan Ferguson’s turn and shot levelled matters in the second half. As both sides went for the winner, David Unsworth’s tackle on Robbie Fowler brought an angry reaction from the Liverpool striker and the two were involved in a scuffle, with referee Steven Lodge sending both players off.
