Friday’s Horse Racing Tips: Chester’s May Meeting 2024

Chester May Meeting

Chester’s three-day May festival draws to a close on Friday and features a host of good betting heats on the Roodee. Here we have three horse racing tips for some of the major races on Friday’s ITV4 card and how you might go about finding some winners.

1.30 Chester – CAA Stellar Earl Grosvenor Handicap

DANCING MAGIC (1.30) often races prominently and should be able to assume a nice early pitch from a decent draw in stall three for the 7½f handicap that opens the ITV4 action at Chester. Roger Teal’s talented four-year-old caught the eye travelling strongly in the Spring Cup over a mile at Newbury on his comeback before failing to find much.

There was no disgrace in fading into sixth in that stronger heat as it was his first start of the campaign and he should strip fitter for the outing.  It could be that this slight drop in trip on a sharp track like Chester is what Dancing Magic has been looking for.

While a 0-12 career record is an obvious worry, the four-year-old has spent the majority of his life contesting better races than this, and the booking of William Buick suggests connections mean business. He is down to a career-low mark of 94 a year on from racing in the Craven and Dante, and this looks like a decent opportunity for one who could have a class edge in this company.

2.35 Chester – Friday Handicap

The tactically versatile CITY STREAK (2.35) has landed the one box in the 1m2½f handicap later at Chester, and hopefully for Oisin Murphy, goes forward as he stays further (to be expected as a half-brother to Goodwood Cup winner Quickthorn).

City Streak shaped nicely on his return at Bath, splitting well-treated Group-class performer Tasman Bay and Champagne Piaff, who bolted up at Epsom on his next outing and is early favourite for a televised handicap at Lingfield on Saturday.

The Bath effort came on the deepest ground City Streak would have encountered and he can benefit from a return to a faster surface off the same mark. With course form figures of 12, it is feasible to believe the in-form Andrew Balding has trained him with this race in mind.

3.05 Chester – Huxley Stakes

Aidan O’Brien’s horses have been needing their returns this term and you’d have to respect anything he runs at Chester with a recent outing behind them.  O’Brien has an outstanding record on the Roodee and HANS ANDERSON (3.05) looks the type to step forward at four, so makes plenty of appeal in an open Huxley Stakes with faster ground expected to suit.

Hans Andersen beat Group 1 winner Al Riffa on a sound surface as a juvenile but hasn’t been seen much since – this will be only his third start since the French 2,000 Guineas last May. He was the Ballydoyle chosen one for the Classic that day and made a winning return at Dundalk last month. That was a weak race compared to this, but he only did what he needed to and will progress for the outing.

With a host of big-race entries coming up from a mile to 1m4f, Hans Andersen can take this next step up the ladder under William Buick and throw his hat in the ring for major honours this summer.
