Rolex Paris Masters

Andy Schooler’s regular Monday match-bets column this week looks at the first-round action at the Rolex Paris Masters.

Rolex Paris Masters: Exclusive Tennis Tips

Many feel Vacherot’s stunning Shanghai Masters triumph will go down as a flash in the pan. However, he put in a fine display against Taylor Fritz in Basel last week, coming within a tie-break of victory before ultimately losing 7-5 in the decider. Losing that first match since his Shanghai success was no disgrace at all and I expect him to arrive in Paris with confidence still high.

Rolex Paris Masters: Valentin Vacherot v Jiri Lehecka

Despite hailing from Monaco, Vacherot can still expect plenty of crowd support in the new La Defense Arena, where reports on Sunday suggested conditions may well be a bit slower than last year across the city in Bercy. If that’s the case, that could well suit Vacherot – Fritz admitted he struggled at times, saying: “When the balls got worn out and it slowed down a lot, that’s when he was controlling me the most and dominating me.”

While Vacherot may well still be on a high, one wonders what Lehecka’s mindset is like following a crushing loss to Botic van de Zandschulp in Basel last week. The Czech won only four games against the qualifier and the manner of that defeat does not bode well for this contest. Back Vacherot at 2.4.

Rolex Paris Masters: Jaume Munar v Daniil Medvedev

I’m expecting another good week from Medvedev but this is a tricky opener. Munar has been playing well, reaching the last 16 in Shanghai and the semis in Basel only last week, where he beat Ben Shelton before losing to eventual champion Joao Fonseca in a tight contest. It’s notable that Munar beat Medvedev comfortably outdoors in Miami earlier this season so he does have the tools to trouble the Russian.

Medvedev has improved significantly since then, ending his title drought in Almaty  earlier this month, after making the semis of that Shanghai Masters event. I do expect him to win but it might not be all plain sailing for the favourite. A 2-1 set scoreline may have some potential here at 3.4, especially given the reports on Sunday of the courts being a bit slower than they were when this tournament was staged across the city in Bercy last year.
