Andy Schooler landed a full house of three winners in last week’s tennis tips. Here’s his look at this week’s first-round matches on the ATP Tour.
Huge Monday Tennis Tips; June 22nd 2026
Altmaier has played pretty well on the grass over the past couple of weeks. He arrives in Eastbourne off the back of a semi-final run in Halle where he defeated both Hubert Hurkacz and Daniil Medvedev before losing to eventual champion Frances Tiafoe. It was also Tiafoe who beat him in Stuttgart (in three close sets).
Tennis Tips: Daniel Altmaier v Aleksandar Kovacevic (Tue)
Prior to that, he’d finished the clay season strongly, beating Ben Shelton en route to the last eight in Hamburg before pushing Felix Auger-Aliassime to a final-set tie-break at Roland Garros. That looks a solid foundation for this match, which comes against an opponent who won only one of his last six matches. On grass, Kovacevic is 1-2 so far this year, the sole victory coming against world number 195 Michael Mmoh. The head-to-head is level at 2-2 (none on grass) but I’m still a little surprised Altmaier isn’t a bit shorter than 1.78 and am happy to back him at that price.
Tennis Tips: Marc Polmans v Grigor Dimitrov (Tue)
It’s almost a year now since Dimitrov looked on the brink of knocking Jannik Sinner out of Wimbledon only to suffer a torn pectoral muscle. Sinner went on to win the title, while the Bulgarian faced months on the sidelines and, now, it looks like his career at the top level might be over.
Having returned to the tour, 2026 has brought a string of disappointing results and he arrives in Mallorca with a 4-11 record for the season. Two of those wins came on the Challenger Tour in Dublin last week where he lost to world number 145 Kyrian Jacquet. His last tour-level victory was back in March – I can’t have him at 1.12 here.
Admittedly, Polmans is ranked lower than Jacquet but what he does have is matches under his belt in the heat of Mallorca where the courts will play considerably different to those in Ireland. Polmans didn’t drop a set in his two qualifiers and while I’m not really expecting him to win this, I do feel he can keep it close. The game handicap gives the Australian a 4.5-game start so that’s the angle I’m going with here.
