With the men’s singles looking very open this year and a short-priced favourite in the women’s draw, Andy Schooler bids to find some French Open value with some longshot French Open Tennis Tips 2024.
French Open Tennis Tips 2024: Men’s Outright
With injury doubts hanging over Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, and form issues causing Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal concern, this year’s French Open looks the most open in years.
Barcelona Open champion Casper Ruud, who has made the last two finals at Roland Garros, could take advantage, but odds of 6.15 don’t make enough appeal – although, of course, they could get supercharged! Instead, let’s look some a couple of long shots who might just make waves in an open field…
The Chilean appears to have hit form at the right time, reaching the final in Rome earlier this month. While he can be streaky, it was no flash in the pan – this time last year he had just beaten Ruud and Alex Zverev en route to the title in Geneva, while he also made a clay final in Buenos Aires earlier this season.
A good server who can hang tough in the long rallies on the clay, Jarry is in the same quarter of the draw as Sinner, whose hop problem remains a worry. He could make waves.
Hardly a household name, Darderi has been one of the ATP’s breakthrough players if 2024, certainly on clay. A surprise champion in Cordoba, he’s now won 25 of 35 matches at all levels on this surface in 2024 – including top-30 wins over Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerundolo – so will arrive in Paris with confidence high.
He’ll need a bit of luck with the draw but he’s avoided the quarters of Djokovic, Alcaraz and Sinner and I’d give him a fighting chance against Zverev, who he pushed to a first-set tie-break in Rome.
French Open Tennis Tips 2024: Women’s Outright
Having won warm-up events in Madrid and Rome, three-time champion Iga Swiatek will take some stopping in Paris, but I’m not sure too many will be backing her at 1.24 with kwiff! And it only takes one bad day for a favourite to fall – few saw her 2021 defeat to Maria Sakkari coming. So, let’s take a look at some alternatives…
Put Swiatek aside and few players have better form coming into this tournament than Keys. Indeed, it took Swiatek to end her runs in both Madrid and Rome where she made the semis and quarters respectively. At time of writing, she’s also reached the last four in Strasbourg.
The American crushes the ball and few can live with her when she’s on song – as she has been of late. A player who often saves her best for the Slams – think Wimbledon quarters, US Open semis last season – she certainly has potential in the opposite half to Swiatek.
Another with outsider credentials. The Ukrainian has long been a tricky test on clay, her favourite surface on which she reached the Rome final last season. She’s also enjoyed deep runs in Charleston and Madrid in the past.
Ahead of Roland Garros, she’s found some form in Strasbourg, beating top seed and Wimbledon queen Marketa Vondrousova. Drawn in what looks the weakest (second) quarter, she could go well at a big price.
