.
Scheffler not only added a second Masters title to his collection, but he also took Olympic gold and ended the year with nine tournament victories. We look at the standout moments and topics of the last 12 months, as the USA dominated the four Majors.
Golf Year in Review: Peerless Scheffler
After going close but failing to win a Major in 2023, Scheffler returned with a bang in 2024 when adding another Green Jacket thanks to a four-shot victory at Augusta. The man from New Jersey came close to winning a third Major title, with a T8 spot at the PGA Championship and then finishing T7 in The Open.
But he stepped up again at the Olympics in August, carding four sub-70 rounds and holding off the challenge of Tommy Fleetwood to collect gold at Le Golf National in Paris. As well as those two victories, Scheffler won six other titles on the PGA Tour – the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, RBC Heritage, Memorial Tournament, Travelers Championship and Tour Championship. All in all, the 28-year-old won 42.9% of the 21 tournaments he contested in 2024 and collected over $55million in prize money.
Golf Year in Review: Super Schauffele
Xander Schauffele has for years been talked about as a future Major winner and the Californian delivered in 2024. His first Major came at Valhalla, when lifting the US PGA Championship trophy after holding off the challenge of Bryson DeChambeau.
Like London buses when one finally comes along another follows quickly, Schauffele then secured a second Major title two months later. The 31-year-old beat the weather and a number of top players to collect the Claret Jug, winning the Open at Troon. Having ended 2023 sat sixth in the world rankings, his double Major success has seen him move up to second behind Scheffler.
Golf Year in Review: The Joy of Six for McIlroy
Although his wait for another Major goes on, Rory McIlroy did collect four titles across the year and in the process, picked up a sixth Race to Dubai crown. The Northern Irishman finishes the year as world number three, but will look upon 2024 as what might have been.
McIlroy came so close to winning the US Open, leading the field going into the final four holes, but three bogeys down the stretch saw DeChambeau pip him by a shot. He missed the cut at The Open and finished outside the medals at the Olympics, where he finished T5.
Golf Year in Review: Rahmbo Back
After joining LIV Golf at the end of last year, Jon Rahm won the 2024 Money List and collected a cool $34.8million in the process. The Spaniard won two events during the season – LIV Golf UK and LIV Golf Chicago – and also secured a top-10 finish (T7) in The Open.
Chile’s Joaquin Niemann also won two tournaments and finished second in the standings. The Rippers – made up of four Australian players, Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, Matt Jones and Lucas Herbert – won the team event.
