GOLF MAJORS PREVIEW
A host of top golfers will go into the new year dreaming of Major glory, so here is our early preview for the four biggest individual men’s golf events of 2025
Golf Majors 2025: The Masters – April 10-13
World number one Scottie Scheffler has won two of the last three editions of The Masters and he is 4.65 favourite to win his third Green Jacket at Augusta National in April.
Drama is almost guaranteed in the battle for what is arguably the greatest prize in golf and it is the one Rory McIlroy would love to get his hands on, so he could become the sixth player to win all four Majors.
His best performance came when he was second in 2022 and he is 9.85 to finally get that weight off his back, while Xander Schauffele, who triumphed in two Majors in 2024, is 10.60 and LIV Golf outright champion Jon Rahm – who won in 2023 – can be backed at 11.20.
Golf Majors 2025: PGA Championship – May 15-18
The 2025 PGA Championship will be played at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, which regularly hosts the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour.
That news will delight McIlroy, who has won that tournament four times, including in 2024, when he beat nearest challenger Schauffele by five shots.
He will be looking for his third PGA Championship – his 2014 Valhalla triumph was his most recent Major success – and he is 9.15 to get the job done, while Scheffler, who has four top-ten PGA finishes, is 5.50 despite having never played in the Wells Fargo.
Defending champion Schauffele is 10.80 after finishing runner-up at the track in each of the last two seasons.
Golf Majors 2025: US Open – June 12-16
June’s US Open will be hosted by Oakmont Golf Club and defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who also triumphed at Winged Foot in 2020, can be backed at 10.70.
McIlroy will be desperate to make up for last year’s disappointment after he opened the door for the American at Pinehurst and he is 8.50, while Scheffler, whose best US Open finish came when he was tied for second behind Matt Fitzpatrick at Brookline in 2022, is 4.50 favourite.
Dustin Johnson triumphed the last time the tournament took place at the Pennsylvania track in 2016 and he is 37.00 for a repeat triumph.
Golf Majors 2025: Open Championship – July 17-20
The only non-Stateside Major will take place in Northern Ireland when the battle for the Claret Jug takes place at Royal Portrush.
McIlroy, who is available to back at 7.75, will hope the home crowd can push him to another triumph to go with the 2014 Open he won at Royal Liverpool, but he will be mindful that he missed the cut when the tournament was last held at the venue in 2019.
Shane Lowry triumphed by six shots on that occasion and the man from County Offaly will have his supporters at 22.70, while Scheffler, whose tie for seventh in last year’s tournament at Royal Troon was his best performance in four Open appearances, is 4.95 for his first Claret Jug.
Defending champion Schauffele, who was 41st at the venue five years ago, is 8.30 for glory.
