Following Scottie Scheffler’s success at the Olympics, the world number one will be hoping to crown a remarkable season at The FedEx St Jude Championship, which is the start of the Fedex Cup play-offs, with a potential $20 million pot heading Scheffler’s way next month at Eastlake.
The top 70 in the rankings will line up to battle it out at TPC Southwind in Memphis, hoping that they will be in a top-50 berth by the end of the weekend to claim their place in the next round, the BMW Championship. But Scheffler may not have everything his own way, with Paris silver medalist Tommy Fleetwood, recently crowned Open champion Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy all in attendance in Tennessee.
FedEx St Jude Championship: Mighty McIlroy
McIlroy may consider 2024 as the year of what might have been, especially after some errant putting handed Bryson DeChambeau the US Open title in June. However, the Northern Irishman showed no signs that he was deflated by missing the cut at The Open when he played solidly at the Olympics, finishing just outside the medals in fifth.
He posted an encouraging closing 66 and he heads to Southwind knowing he is equipped to tame the Memphis track, where he has finished in the top 10 three times. He was third last year when a storming 65 finish was one shot short of earning him a place in the play-off between Lucas Glover and Patrick Cantlay, and he should be confident that he can perform even better this time at 8.20.
FedEx St Jude Championship: Crafty Conners
Corey Conners is available to back at 26.70 and there looks a strong chance that the Canadian can be a factor even in this strong field. Like McIlroy, he carded a Sunday 66 at Le Golf National which earned him a share of ninth spot and he has shown great consistency over the last few weeks.
He has not finished outside the top 30 in his last 10 tournaments and he put together the best of seven visits to Southwind last year when he earned sixth spot. That performance could have been a lot more fruitful had he not slipped to a disappointing 72 on the Friday, but two weekend rounds of 65 will provide happy Memphis memories.
FedEx St Jude Championship: Aaron Flying Rai
Aaron Rai claimed his first PGA Tour title last week at the Wyndham Championship and could oblige again at 33.00. The 29-year-old’s win at Sedgefield Golf & Country Club came after a series of good performances as he was second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, seventh at the John Deere Classic and fourth at the Scottish Open recently. He will also take confidence from the fact that last year’s FedEx St Jude Championship winner Lucas Glover completed the same double 12 months ago.
