Expert Golf Tips: Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024

It’s crunch time on the DP World Tour, with this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024 at Yas Links the penultimate event of the campaign and the first of two play-off tournaments. A total of 70 players will battle it out for the spoils before the top 50 in the Race to Dubai standings then head to Jumeirah Golf Estates for next week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024 Preview

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy has a healthy R2D lead, as he sits just over 1500 points ahead of second-placed Thriston Lawrence, and the four-time Major champion is the 4.65 favourite to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship for the first time and extend his advantage.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024: Top Tyrell

Although Tyrrell Hatton can still mathematically finish top of the Race to Dubai standings, it is unlikely that scenario will happen, but that won’t stop him from contending for the big prizes on offer over the next two weeks and he can take home the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship for the second time. The 33-year-old lifted the trophy at Abu Dhabi GC in 2021 and his two outings at Yas Links, which is described as the first true links test in the UAE, since that triumph have produced results of sixth (2022) and seventh (2023).

Hatton landed the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship for the third time in October and, given one of the courses used in that event, Kingsbarns, is designed by Yas Links creator Kyle Philips, it’s perhaps no surprise to see the Englishman performing so well on those layouts. The world number 21, who also landed the LIV Golf Nashville title in June, looks to be on top of his game right now and he looks the biggest danger to McIlroy this week.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024: Lovely Lawrence

Thriston Lawrence sits second in the R2D standings and he looks capable of closing the gap to McIlroy ahead of next week’s season-ending showdown on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. The South African is one of the best drivers on tour and given the rough will be longer than it has been over the last couple of editions, his proficiency off the tee could give him an advantage over a large portion of the field.

Lawrence has also been dynamite on the greens this season and he leads in strokes gained putting, while he ranks in the top 10 for putters per round, putters per green in regulation and one putts. The world number 50 has had a couple of near-misses of late, finishing second at the British Masters and tied-second at the BMW PGA Championship, and he can go one better this week.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024: Super Swede

Sebastian Soderberg has enjoyed a very consistent season on the DP World Tour and the only thing missing has been a victory, with his best chance coming when he blew an eight-shot lead at the Scandinavian Mixed. The 34-year-old has shown his affinity for links golf, especially at Kingsbarns, where he is a combined -14 for his last two rounds, while he was tied-second at last year’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship when finishing one stroke behind Victor Perez.

While Soderberg is a tempting each-way price at 57.00, the safer play here is to back him for a top-10 finish, which he has achieved no less than seven times this year.
