Giro d’Italia Tips
Tadej Pogacar has stayed healthy and, unlike some of his rivals, has also avoided crashes this season as he looks to secure a rare Giro-Tour double in a single season. The Giro route has been reduced in terms of climbing, while two time-trials may have also played into the hands of the man from Slovenia.
Pogacar is trying to become the first rider to win both the pink and yellow jerseys in a season since Marco Pantani in 1998, as he also targets a third Tour de France success later in the year. The 25-year-old has already won three of the four races he has entered this season – triumphing in the Strade Bianche, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Volta a Catalunya, while UAE Team Emirates have provided him with a strong support team, which looks capable of guiding Pogacar to potential Giro victory.
His closest rival could be Romain Bardet, who finished second behind Pogacar in this year’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege race. The six mountain-top finishes in Italy should suit Frenchman Bardet, who remains one of the strongest climbers in the sport. The Team DSM-firmenich PostNL rider has finished in the top 10 in seven of his 15 Grand Tours, including two podiums at the Tour de France.
