Premier League of Darts – Week 6 Preview with Polly James from Brighton
It’s been an incredible start to the Premier League of Darts season and the next stop on this darting roadshow moves on from the Devonshire countryside to the Great British seaside, as week 6 hits Brighton as we get ready for another dose of darting drama.
We might have a clear leader for now but the chasing pack are closing in and the race is a tight one. The reigning champion Mighty Mike has a healthy lead sitting pretty at the top of table on 15 points, but behind him a congested contest is forming for a play-off position.
Premier League Darts 2024 Night 6 Winner (from kwiff)
Michael Van Gerwen 4.0
Luke Littler 4.20
Luke Humphries 5.50
Gerwyn Price 7.50
Michael Smith 7.50
Rob Cross 9.50
Nathan Aspinall 10.0
Peter Wright 18.0
Teenage sensation Luke Littler is hunting down his first nightly win and starts this evening locked on 9 points with Rob Cross just behind him on leg difference. The Asp is riding high, he makes up the top 4 after victory in Exeter last week. Can he go back to back tonight? Just 1 point outside of play off positions stands Michael Smith and UK open finalist, Luke Humphries on 7 points each followed by Gerwyn Price on 5 points who dropped down to 7th place after disappointment in Exeter and then finally our non-mover with zero points, Peter Wright is still yet to get his campaign up and running.
Form Players
The first quarter-final in Brighton tonight sees Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price go toe to toe. It was World number 1, Cool Hand, who put a halt to the winning streak of MVG in last week’s quarter-finals before losing a last-leg decider to eventual winner Nathan Aspinall in the semi-finals. The Asp looked in good nick last weekend in Minehead too, where his missed match darts against eventual UK Open Champion Dimi Van Den Bergh.
It was a weekend in Butlins that Gezzy will want to forget, knocked out in the last 64 the day after he was beaten quite convincingly 6-1 by Rob Cross in his opening quarter-final match in Exeter last week. A couple of points tonight though will get him right back in the mix, but Luke Humphries, surely he is playing too well right now not to win one soon?
High Voltage
The next quarter-final is where Rob Cross continues his relatively successful campaign so far. A man who has been quietly going about his business this Premier League season thus far and picking up points every single week.
Cross boasts wins over Gerwyn Price and Luke Littler, losing to Nathan Aspinall in last week’s final, and tonight he faces the reigning champion MVG. Mighty Mike’s unstoppable winning supreme was in fact stopped by Luke Humphries last week, so of course, Michael will be hoping to put things right this evening.
The third quarter-final is between good pals and stablemates, Nathan Aspinall and Luke Littler. Luke is the bookies’ favourite, but I just wonder? Nathan was unlucky last week at The UK Open and has won 5 of his last 6 PL matches after Night 5 success in Exeter.
Night 6 Match Prices from kwiff
1.57 Luke Humphries v Gerwyn Price 2.15
2.20 Rob Cross v Michael Van Gerwen 1.55
2.55 Nathan Aspinall v Luke Littler 1.42
1.52 Michael Smith v Peter Wright 2.30
Aspinall said in our interview in Exeter “I’ve been watching my games back, something I’ve never done, and starting to analyse my performances closer. The misses haven’t been that bad, closer than I thought, and I’m trying to be less hard on myself when things don’t go to plan.”
The 17-year-old remains in excellent form on the oche and, after being the tournament favourite with eight players left on Sunday, was unfortunate to go out to Aussie Damon Heta in the quarters. An average of 104 was unable to see him through to the last four but ‘The Nuke’ continues to play at a standard that means success is inevitable. Can he pick up where he left off?
Surprise Surprise
And finally, an intriguing match-up to wrap up the quarter-finals. Peter Wright, who has yet to win a match in the Premier League this season, and former World Champion Michael Smith, who has won only one Premier League game since his night one win in Cardiff.
Things haven’t gone right for ‘Bully Boy’ since success on the opening night in Cardiff – maybe it was the dragon on his shirt that roared him onto glory? Just a reminder that Peter only got his Premier League campaign up and running last year on night 6 in a QF clash against Gerwyn Price which ended in 6-5, will we witness the same destiny this evening against Bully Boy?
It should be a great night of darts in Brighton – I will be there interviewing the players backstage – and the action starts at 7pm live on Sky Sports Action. I think we’ll see a few surprises too – would be keen to take on any player at odds in a best of 11.
