Croeso i Gaerdydd! Welcome to Cardiff!

What a treat that this year’s Premier League of Darts roadshow kicks off proceedings in my own home town. Along with it being the opening night, Cardiff was the first night to sell-out on the Premier League calendar – the locals love the darts!

We crave a big showdown of arrows, fancy dress and the odd beverage or two –  especially when the class of 2024 includes once again Welshman Gerwyn ‘Gezzy’ Price. The Iceman just so happens to be from just down the road, and is sure to have a big following in the Welsh capital.

Premier League Darts 2024 Line-Up

The marathon darting extravaganza will see the world’s elite stars competing across 16 league phase nights, with the top four progressing to the Play-Offs. We know Gezzy, the 2021 World Champion, is in there bidding to go one better than last year’s 11-5 defeat to Michael Van Gerwen in the final – but who else will be joining them at dart’s top table?

It’s of little surprise that reigning Premier League champion ‘Mighty Mike’ gets in, on the hunt for an unprecedented eighth PL Title. Former World Champions Michael Smith, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright and Rob Cross are also part of the weekly cast, alongside World Matchplay Champion Nathan Aspinall.

Rivalries Renewed

The two debutants are the two finalists from this year’s Ally Pally – Luke Humhries and Luke Littler – both involved after record-breaking World Championships. World Number One Luke Humphries capped-off an amazing season by becoming World Champion, building on his earlier successes in the Grand Prix and the Grand Slam to cement himself as the top dog in the sport.

Meanwhile  Littler, the first professional darts player to hit a million followers on social media, has ridden the crest of a media wave after capturing the imagination of the British public with his antics on the Ally Pally stage. ‘Luke the Nuke’ showed calmness beyond his years on his way to the final and is likely to stand a good chance of adding the £275,000 winners cheque, to go along with the £200,000 pocketed for finishing second to ‘Cool Hand Luke’ last month.

Luke Littler Mania

There is no hiding from the fact that boy wonder now has a target on his back -.there will be plenty of places wanting to take the teenager down a peg or two! Luke told me ‘They are all coming for me’ during our sit down for Sky Sports last week, and time will tell if he can go toe-to-toe week-in and week-out with the best in the sport.

More importantly, he will need to stay focused and composed in front of the biggest crowds in the sport. Littler said. ‘I can’t wait to play in every venue, 12,000 fans in Berlin and London if I make it there, Manchester and Liverpool as my local shows’. This man is embracing a huge opportunity given to him by the PDC and to his peers that must be terrifying – the man is absolutely fearless.

Premier League Darts 2024 Predictions

I can see Luke winning plenty of the nights during the 16 weeks; in Cardiff though? It’s possible for Luke and Gerwyn to meet in the final if both come through their Quarters and Semis, potentially setting up a tantalising final. Luke Littler must lock horns with Luke Humphries in his QF in another blockbuster clash and repeat of the World Championship final.

Local boy Gerwyn Price plays Nathan Aspinall in a repeat of last year’s decider in the Welsh capital, which saw ‘Gezzy’ send the fans home happy 12 months ago..He will be hoping to do the same this Thursday night but, the mix of former World Champions with fearless fresh faces means The Iceman will need to be at his very best to come out on top for Night 1.

I’r Gad! Let the battle begin…
