Dave Chisnall sits down with kwiff to discuss his success last weekend in Leverkusen as ‘Chizzy’ claimed Euro Tour success number 7, solidifying his place as World Number 7 in the order of merit after becoming European Darts Open 2024 Champion.

European Darts Open 2024

I mentioned last week, the cards had fallen right in terms of schedule for me to give this week a good go, and it didn’t half prove to be right. That 4pm afternoon spot is perfect for me, in terms of getting the day off to a flyer and not hanging about. We got to the hotel at around 1am, and that allowed us to get a decent night’s kip and a good breakfast into us.

Luke Woodhouse played really well, he’s a really good lad and fellow Harrows team-mate, and you could argue I got a bit lucky to beat him in my first game. I had to come from behind to win 6-5. With Luke sat on 161, and me on 181, I hit a nice T20-T1-T20 to leave 58. I took the 58 out no bother.

In the next game, I beat Kevin Doets 6-4 and played better, despite having a lesser average. The deeper you get into a tournament the better I feel, oddly enough, so I always find the second game much easier, because you don’t want to be travelling all that way to come home with your tail between your legs after losing the first game. Also, it means you’ll be getting some much needed rankings points!

European Darts Open 2024: Quarter-Finals

Another team Harrow member was Ryan Searle, who went 5-3 after taking out some decent doubles and was one leg away from victory. I had 87 left, with him on 50, and took out the bull to level up and win the decider. Those type of wins really help with the confidence. It’s easy to do it in practice, or even exhibitions,

The Harrows gauntlet was completed by Damon Heta in the semi-finals, and I got off to a flyer to lead 3-0 early doors with some good finishing. I don’t think Damon had a dart at a double in those legs either. I led 5-0 and ended up winning 7-1 with a proper finish. Treble 20, Treble 11, Double 14 to take out 121 and make the final.

European Darts Open 2024: Title Number 7

I played Ross Smith in the final, who’s a proper player, and will win one of these finals. He’s too good not to. The game was a bit scrappy and went with throw until I went 5-3 up by breaking his throw, and I was pretty comfortable thereafter I think. I went 6-3 but he found a break to make it 6-6 and it was up for grabs again. Ross was on 212, with me on 132, and chucked in a maximum against the throw and you can tell he thought he’d nicked the leg.

From there, I went 25 Treble 19 Bull to take out 132 and you can just tell it hurt him. Those ones mean a lot, because it’s finding darts when the pressure is really on. In the final leg, Ross missed a few darts at a double and I took out 100 in two darts to win my 7th Euro Title, and it’s nice to be rewarded as I felt it had been coming.

I’ve got a great record in finals, I think I’ve won 5 of my last 6 Euro Tour Finals, and won the last Pro Tour Final I played earlier in the season so I’m in good nick. Roll on The Matchplay at Blackpool!

New Darts

Also, a quick shout out to Harrows, because I played with new darts in Germany and they worked a treat. I went up to 23g (from 22g) and I felt the darts flowed so much better. I still had the odd snatchy one (where I often go into Treble 1) but otherwise very pleased, and fingers crossed they bring more wins this season!

England

The one sour note from the week was watching England so far at Euro 2024! I can’t believe how negative they’ve been so far, and really hope they give it a go against Slovakia at the weekend. He has to start the two Lancastrian lads who looked class when they came on in the last game. I think he plays Mainoo and Palmer, and think Palmer nets a goal. Palmer and Kane for me as England win 2-0. Come on England!
