5 Most Famous British Boxers: UK Sporting Royalty

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have dominated the heavyweight headlines, but Daniel Dubois announced himself on the scene when winning the WBA world title and then successfully defending that belt in stunning style against Joshua last month.  We have raided the archives, as well as considering modern-day fighters, as we take a look at the five most famous British boxers of all time.

5 Most Famous British Boxers: Frank Bruno

Bruno, Bruno, Bruno was a chant that rang out from ringside throughout the 80s and 90s and Frank Bruno was a heavyweight who enjoyed a following which few fighters have been able to match.  The Hammersmith hitter memorably mounted three failed world title challenges, with defeats coming to Tim Witherspoon, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis.

However, Bruno enjoyed his day in the sun when winning the WBC heavyweight title in front of a packed Wembley crowd in 1995 by beating Oliver McCall. That proved to be the penultimate bout of the Londoner’s career, who then went on to forge a television and acting career.

5 Most Famous British Boxers: Ricky Hatton

Former light-welterweight and welterweight world champion Ricky Hatton was a fighter who could call on a fanatical following.  The Manchester man famously took what appeared the entire population of his hometown to Las Vegas when the Hitman took on the imperious Floyd Mayweather in 2007.

Hatton is still a regular on the boxing scene and has various promotion and management interests.

5 Most Famous British Boxers: Chris Eubank

Chris Eubank was a fantastically tough super-middleweight and Dulwich dueller will always be remembered for his incredible efforts in bouts against Steve Collins and Nigel Benn.  Eubank and Benn built a fierce rivalry, but aside from that, the Londoner won world titles at both middleweight and super-middleweight.

Outside of the ring, there hasn’t been a fighter who has been able to match the style, charisma, charm and showmanship of the eccentric Eubank.

5 Most Famous British Boxers: Naseem Hamed

Britain had never seen a fighter in the mold of Naseem Hamed. The Prince dazzled in the ring with incredible reflexes and footwork, with the showmanship of extravagant ring entrances and interviews was something to behold.

The Sheffield slickster was a lineal featherweight champion and we are yet to see a boxer who can star in the style of Hamed.

5 Most Famous British Boxers: Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua’s run as a top-level heavyweight may have come to an end after defeat to Daniel Dubois, but the Watford whacker can still call on an incredible following.  The former big-hitting world champion has captured an audience way beyond regular boxing fans and Joshua has taken the sport to a new height of fame.

The ‘super-fights’ promoted by bosses Matchroom Sports has made Eddie Hearn a rich man, with sell-outs against the likes of Wladimir Klitschko and Kubrat Pulev at Wembley, alongside Carols Takam and Joseph Parker at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. His recent defeats against Andy Ruiz, Oleksandr Usyk (twice) and most recently to Daniel Dubois haven’t dented his legacy, and he undoubtedly remains one of the 5 most famous British boxers of the modern era.
