Royal Ascot draws to a close on Saturday with seven fascinating contests to consider, on the finale of Flat racing’s biggest meeting. Here we look at some of the major races on Saturday’s ITV card and give Royal Ascot Saturday Tips with hopefully a few winners thrown in.
Royal Ascot 2024 Saturday Tips: Pentle Bay (2.30 Royal Ascot)
PENTLE BAY (2.30) was earmarked for the Chesham Stakes before he even made his debut for George Boughey at Leicester 18 days ago, and the fact he managed to win there over 6f suggests we are dealing with a smart prospect. The son of New Bay is out of a Galileo mare and should have found that distance too sharp. We are likely going to see a completely different proposition second time out with Boughey likely to have left plenty to work on ahead of Pentle Bay’s debut.
It has to be encouraging that he managed to account for three more prominently ridden rivals, who had the benefit of previous experience behind them. Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby’s juveniles are often overbet at Royal Ascot and Pentle Bay deserves more respect in the market.
Royal Ascot 2024 Saturday Tips Task Force (16:25 Royal Ascot)
River Tiber is undoubtedly the one to beat in the Jersey Stakes, but the betting tells you that, and there is usually a hard-luck story or two in 20+runner fields at the Royal meeting. In any case, there wasn’t much between River Tiber and TASK FORCE (4.25) on their two-year-old form (both recorded peak Racing Post Ratings of 110 as juveniles) and Ralph Beckett’s colt still remains a top prospect.
By Frankel and out of 1,000 Guineas winner Special Duty, Task Force showed plenty of speed to finish second in the Middle Park last September and pulled too hard on his return in the 2,000 Guineas, when seventh at Newmarket (form which is working out).
He was three lengths off the race-fit Haatem that day and benefits from a 3lb pull on his second run of the season. That was the selection’s first start after wind surgery and Beckett’s horses were not hitting the heights then. We can expect better from Task Force with the drop back to 7f looking in his favour.
Royal Ascot 2024 Saturday Tips: Approval (17.40 Royal Ascot)
Three of the first four runnings of the Golden Gates Stakes went the way of a handicap debutant and perhaps APPROVA. (5.40) can follow suit for William Haggas. Approval recorded a strong time when making all at Windsor 12 days ago and it looks significant that Haggas is happy to roll the dice for what is a competitive Royal Ascot handicap so soon after that.
An RPR of 97 for that performance suggests Approval can make hay in handicaps off a BHA mark of 90 and he evidently loves fast ground. Tom Marquand will need to be on his A-game to negate a slightly lower-than-ideal draw in stall six, but the top rider can be trusted to do so with his mount making more appeal than the other six handicap debutants in the line up. They have much less in hand based on RPRs.
