Horse Racing Sandown, Salisbury and Fontwell

The weekend is lurking close once more and it’s a busy Friday for UK and Irish race fans, with eight meetings scheduled to take place.

They race at Ffos Las, Southwell, Salisbury, Thirsk and Horse Racing Sandown on the Flat, while jumps action comes from Fontwell, Down Royal and Wexford.

We’ve picked out a trio of horses to follow on Friday, hoping to find some winners to kick-start the final weekend of August.

1.50 Horse Racing Sandown – Visit Sri Lanka Nursery (5f)

Mick Appleby’s Nad Alshiba Green was a good winner of a nursery at Bath (5f, good) last month and didn’t lose any caste in defeat under a 5lb penalty at Lingfield (6f, good) a week later.

On that occasion, the filly was second-best behind Griselda, as the George Scott inmate completed the middle leg of a hat-trick. She was racing off 63 that day and is now rated some 20lb higher.

Oisin Murphy was on board when Nad Alshiba Green scored at Bath and returns in the plate now and with a drop back to the minimum distance appealing, the Dark Angel filly has excellent claims of completing a second turf success at Horse Racing in Sandown.

4.55 Horse Racing Salisbury – Edwards Ford, Foray Motor Group Nursery (1m)

It’s been a leaner time than trainer George Boughey would have hoped for, but Montbeliarde may be capable of providing a welcome winner for his string in this Salisbury nursery.

The Oasis Dream gelding didn’t show a lot in three runs in maiden/novice company on turf at Windsor, Nottingham and Newmarket, but it was a much-improved effort on his handicap bow at Kempton this month as he finished second.

He was facing a rival from the Richard Hughes team that had gone close at the Sunbury venue previously and was 6lb well-in on official ratings and gave him plenty to think about after they had pulled clear of the field.

In-form pilot Hector Crouch is in the saddle now and the step up in trip to a mile should suit Montbeliarde as he races from an unchanged mark, so he is taken to open his account.

5.35 Horse Racing Fontwell – Rapunzel Me Lush And Long Handicap Hurdle (2m5½f)

Both Earth Cry and River Robe hold fair claims in this handicap, but the recent signs from Stans The Man hint that he is going to get his head in front soon for trainer Ella Pickard.

The Milan gelding won his maiden over 2m3f here in January last year, but he hasn’t enjoyed the best of times after finishing second on handicap bow at Ffos Last afterwards.

He underwent a wind op following a tame comeback this season and his two most recent efforts were pleasing.

He was fourth at Uttoxeter in July and then second at Worcester (2m7f, good) 11 days ago, coming home strongly after the final jump and looking very much as if he’d have claimed the prize in another few strides.

He races from an unchanged mark here and he should exploit this reduced rating soon.
