Horse Race Meetings: Sedgefield, Cork and Newcastle
There are five race meetings taking place across the UK and Ireland on Tuesday to kick off the month of October.
Flat racing is at Bath, Ayr and Cork alongside the all-weather meeting from Newcastle in the evening, while they go jumping at Sedgefield.
We’ve picked out a trio worth a second look from across the cards.
Horse Race Meetings: 3.00 Sedgefield – Novices’ Handicap Chase (2m5f)
Jamie Snowden’s Climbing may be ready to open his account under Gavin Sheehan in this Novices’ Handicap Chase at Sedgefield.
The six-year-old shaped with some promise in maiden hurdles last year and was back from 312 days off following a wind op when second at Stratford (2m3½f, good) on his chasing bow in July.
He jumped well under a patient ride there and ran on gamely for the silver medal. A more forceful ride since at Worcester didn’t pay off and a return to hold up tactics is likely now, which can give him every chance of a first success.
Horse Race Meetings: 4.15 Cork – Navigation Stakes (Listed, 1m)
The race of the day comes in Ireland as Cork hosts the Listed Navigation Stakes over a mile, and while others have achieved more, the Joseph O’Brien-trained Wigmore Street looks worth a go in this grade.
The American Pharoah gelding has six runs behind him now, five of them since joining this stable from Simon & Ed Crisford, and has taken his form up a level in recent times.
He won the Irish Cambridgeshire at the Curragh (1m, good) in late August and went up 7lb to a mark of 100 for his troubles.
He turned out again during the Irish Champions Festival and ran a sound third in the Northfields Handicap over 1m2f, running well as he shipped weight to the likes of This Songisforyou and Indigo Five.
The drop back in trip looks like a positive and he is capable of a big effort under Dylan McMonagle.
Horse Race Meetings: 5:30 Newcastle – Arc Weekend On Sky Sports Racing Handicap (2m)
Unique Spirit looks a winner waiting to happen for trainer David O’Meara after successive runner-up finishes over this course and distance.
The son of Waldgeist is a maiden of seven races and has easily produced his best efforts so far since going up in trip to compete over C&D in two races last month.
A bang in-form rival beat him in a tight finish on his first go at the trip, with Doublethetrouble completing a double that day and then going down a nose at Kempton since.
He then bumped into an unexposed improver in Different Drum next time and, nudged up a mere 1lb for that near miss, Danny Tudhope’s partner looks ready to get his nose in front.
