Dave Massey is back ahead of Day 3 of Glorious Goodwood, giving his leading fancies ahead of another top class day of flat racing.
1:50 Goodwood – Coral Kincsem Handicap 1m1f
Bourbon Blues has finally had a bit of respite from the handicapper, dropped 2lb for his latest effort over a mile at Sandown but it’s a trip that’s on the short side for him these days, and I’d rather concentrate on his earlier efforts, particularly his close sixth in the Golden Gates at Royal Ascot the time before. That’s a solid piece of form; fourth home Nil Bua Gan Dua won a Listed event next time out, and the winner looks a Group horse in waiting anyway. He has an easy Brighton win to his name, which would give you some hope he’ll handle Goodwood’s undulations, and I think he looks the each-way value, for all he’s much more exposed than a few here.
3:00 Goodwood – 1m4f Gordon Stakes
Sahara King looks the one to be with. Progressive throughout this year, he ran Lost Boys (there’s a few formlines today tying in with him, it seems) to a neck in the London Gold Cup and his tenth in the Golden Gates is a much better run that it looks, one of a few on the day caught in traffic and too far back to launch a challenge, but he stayed on in eyecatching fashion once in the clear, hands and heels only, and as a hold-up he’ll get this run to suit. With only seven runners, there shouldn’t be any traffic problems today, and he’s quite a confident choice, particularly as he’s been gelded, which might also sort out his hanging issues….
4:10 Goodwood – Bucatelli Handicap 5f
Call Margot, berthed in stall 3, is on my watching list at the moment. She totally has her quirks, I’ll not argue that, but she also has talent, and she showed that when a very unlucky loser of the 3yo version of the Epsom Dash this season. Had she seen daylight earlier I’m fairly certain she would have won, instead having to settle for a ¾ length second to Naana’s Shadow, and whilst she was once again below par at Hamilton last time, perhaps that run came too soon after Epsom. She’s had a 43-day break since then, which ought to refresh her, and I do think Goodwood’s undulations might keep her mind occupied. The pace here is described as “extreme” by Timeform and it’s hard to disagree with that; I can count no fewer than eight of these that want to lead, and the pace is spread across the track. Call Margot, as a hold-up, is going to get it run to suit her; it’s all about whether she’s in the mood.
4:45 Goodwood – Whispering Angel Nursery 7f
High Hazard has been gelded since last being seen at Beverley, which is a slight surprise as he didn’t look like one that needed it, but clearly a decision has been made; he’s taken small steps forward rather anything major, but it was a decent speed figure he clocked at Beverley and the fourth, Asander, who Rosberg beat easily enough, came out and won a Newcastle novice at 50-1 on next start. I have a suspicion that form is going to be stronger than it looks, and an opening mark of 74 looks fair. He does have to prove himself on the track, of course, but that goes for pretty much everything here.
