Saturday Racing Tips

Dave Massey enjoyed a successful spell last weekend at Cheltenham’s November Meeting and is back with Saturday Racing Tips ahead of Betfair Chase Day at Haydock, and excellent supporting cards at Ascot and Huntingdon. Read his exclusive thoughts each and every week with kwiff.

Saturday Racing Tips: Ascot and Haydock, Nov 21st 2025

A cracking contest, this staying handicap hurdle, and plenty of form lines that tie in with one another to try and help us solve it.  Ma Shantou came out on top of a few of these at Cheltenham last time out but make no mistake, he was bang fit for that and won’t come on much in terms of fitness for it. Second home Electric Mason has a fair chance of reversing the form on 5lb better terms (eight if you include Freddie Gordon’s claim) and potentially slower ground.

Saturday Racing Tips: Joyeux Machin (Haydock, 2.25)

It’s worth bearing in mind Electric Mason won second time up last year too, so ought to be spot on here, and has to be on anyone’s shortlist for this.  Ace Of Spades is the chosen mount of Harry Skelton, but it’s the other Dan Skelton inmate, Joyeux Machin, that interests me today.

He just looked in need of his first start of the season in the Tote Silver Trophy at Chepstow but ran a pleasing race to finish seventh, staying on well late in the piece and looking ready for a step back up to three miles, a trip that he has already won at and went very close on Uttoxeter’s Midland National day, finding only Red Risk a neck too good.

That Chepstow form is working out well already, and having had wind surgery since that run, there’s plenty in his favour today. Speaking of that Tote Silver Trophy form, French Ship, a faller in that when holding every chance, made amends by winning at Cheltenham next time, beating Navajo Indy. The runner-up chances his arm over three miles here, and whilst that is an unknown, he’s a horse still improving and will enjoy a bit more rain. He’s worth consideration as one that’s unexposed over this trip.

Saturday Racing Tips: Bobbi With an I (Ascot, 12.55)

A couple interest me here. Good Luck Charm was taken out of Cheltenham last week and is rerouted here. The first thing to say is the track configuration here will probably suit her a lot better, given she all of her hurdles wins have come on right-handed tracks, and although this is her seasonal reappearance she did win first time up last year, successful at Sandown in heavy ground, so that can be taken as a positive rather than a negative.

She’s still on a fair mark and will be worth a saver if the price is right.  But it’s the Tizzard’s unexposed Bobbi With An I (12:55) that catches the eye from the foot of the handicap. A 40-length point-to-point winner, she was successful first time up at Wincanton despite some signs of greenness and looked one to follow. Throw into Listed company at Doncaster on her next start she bled from the nose, and that was it for the season.

Her reappearance fourth to Apples Moon at Exeter a fortnight ago, though, was full of promise, Bobbi With An I staying on in taking fashion late and looking ready for the step up to three miles. She remains totally unexposed for a yard flying along at present, and  is my idea of the winner.

Saturday Racing Tips: My Silver Lining (Ascot, 2.05)

Initially I found this year’s Berkshire National a hard race to call, but a second look after declarations has persuaded me to have a crack at it with My Silver Lining (2.05), who hasn’t won for a while but to be fair, has contested some pretty tough races in the past twelve months and might find this easier, particularly as she’s now 10lb lower than she was this time last year, which will help her out too.

Fourth in the MIdlands National last season, she returned with a good fourth to Lord Accord at Wincanton at the end of October, just looking in need of the run against a fitter Lord Accord, who had had an outing at Chepstow previously to blow the cobwebs away. She only gave best very late in the day there, having shaped like the second best horse on the day, so a 6lb swing in the weights in her favour over this longer trip, plus she ought to strip fitter today, all means she’s every chance of reversing that form. She looks solid each-way material.

Saturday Racing Tips: Mexican Stan (Huntingdon, 1:58)

Over at Huntingdon, keep an eye out on Mexican Stan in this 2m4f handicap hurdle. He’s on my tracker as one that should be winning handicaps this season, particularly now he’s stepped up in trip, as he shaped well a couple of times in novice hurdles last year. He wasn’t given a hard time when fourth to St Pancras at Stratford on his final start of last season and it’s a case of whether or not he needs this first start of the year after being off since March.
