Saturday Racing Tips: Dave Massey’s Weekend Best Bets
Saturday Racing Tips: Ziggy’s Angel (2:45)
The one I like at the prices here is Ziggy’s Angel (2.45), who is still fairly lightly-raced compared to many of these, and from two starts at Ripon has a win and a ½ length second to her name. It might be asking a lot of a 3yo to win this, but she gets a 3lb allowance for her age and she looks the likely pace angle from those drawn near the rail.
Kings Merchant has Ripon form that ties him in closely with Fortamour from last year and didn’t shape too badly at York last time; it’s been a lean old season for Phil Kirby, just five winners since the turn of the year but in the interests of some balance, four of those have come in the last few weeks, so maybe the corner is slowly being turned. He’s worth a look at a price as well.
Saturday Racing Tips: Rock Opera (3:20)
It has – it must – drop right for Rock Opera (3.20) at some point, he’s been unlucky in big-field handicaps at York on more than one occasion recently and although his Ripon record of three runs, no places doesn’t look great at first glance, a bit of digging reveals one of those efforts was on heavy, which he’d have hated, and on the other two made late headway, so on balance he probably handles the track, and probably gets the tow in from Alzahir and Supreme King from his high draw. Hard to see him out the frame and maybe this is where he gets his due reward for some consistent efforts.
Saturday Racing Tips: Jumby (3:00)
Jumby (3.00) looked a picture in the paddock at Newmarket last week and ran another smashing race to be third to Royal Zabeel, doing his usual good late work and straight after I wondered whether we might see him today, as the 2022 Hungerford winner (and only just denied last year in the race, too) saves some of his best efforts for Newbury. It’s been a while since he won one, but the handicapper has had him in his grip for some time, and is only starting to relent this year. He should go close.
Saturday Racing Tips: Of Course You Can (7:28)
I’m going to throw one in at Market Rasen because if/when it all goes south with the afternoon tips, we can get out of jail with Of Course You Can (7.28), who looks the sort to go well after a break. That was the case when she won at Ludlow last October, easily beating Bethpage (form looks solid) by 9½ lengths and looking like this sort of trip would suit. “Freshened up by an 83-day break” was the reason given by the trainer as to her improvement that day, so a 100-day break here looks ideal. Still looks well handicapped.
