The Life of a Trainer with Ruth Jefferson

Trainer Ruth Jefferson is back with this week’s kwiff diary, reflecting on Ladiva Adiva’s run at Aintree on Sunday, and preparing a raindance over Newstead Stables with rain needed for intended runners in November.

Ruth Jefferson: Ladiva Adiva

Ladiva Adiva was a bit of a disappointment at Aintree, when in hindsight we probably rode her completely the wrong way. She was a bit buzzy, as she always is, and was up with the pace throughout. Those in front early all fell out the back however, with the race falling apart and she paid the price as a result. We’ll write it off as a learning experience, but haven’t lost faith in her. She’s come out of the race well and look for another race for her again soon. Who knows, the handicapper may even show some mercy and drop her a few pounds for it!

Ruth Jefferson: Entries

Most of our runners are still wanting a drop of rain. You can see from Wetherby’s Charlie Hall meeting, how those that would have been intended runners just haven’t got their ground at the minute – Grey Dawning being pulled from Saturday’s feature being the key case in point. Nevertheless, there’s a few showers forecast in the week and we should have a couple of Hexham and Kelso, so keep your eyes peeled.

Ruth Jefferson: Stable Stars

God love him, Bruce (Sounds Russian) seems to uncover new niggles by the day, and we aren’t likely to be running him until Christmas time now. It was great to get a win into him – a rare case of a British runner fending off the powerhouse of Willie Mullins – at Perth’s April meeting, and that confidence booster will have done him the world of good. He’s got bad knees however, and we aren’t in any hurry to rush him out this season.

Another who has similar problems is Kerryhill – who had his River Don form franked again last weekend with Nigel Twiston-Davies’ The Newest One scoring impressively at Cheltenham’s Showcase Meeting. The fourth from that race won first time out at Chepstown and Kerry’s hanidcap mark of 137 may be tempting enough to keep him in handicap company for the time being. He will make a chaser eventually, but will likely start out over timber when likely seen later this month. Keep your eyes peeled for more info!
