Trainer Ross Burdon is back with another update, after a disappointing week on track, and eyes now locked onto all-weather action next Monday. Read his exclusive kwiff preview here.
Ross Burdon Racing HUGE Update: Busy Month Continues
We’ve had a frustrating week at RB Racing. I was looking forward to seeing Mesaafi back in action at Chelmsford last Thursday, he just did far too much early from his wide draw and ultimately paid the price, fading to finish fourth behind the impressive winner Evening Saigon.
Ross Burdon Racing: Mesaafi Update
The horse is sort of stuck between two trips, he doesn’t quite seem to see out a strongly run six furlongs and isn’t quite quick enough to drop back to five unless on a very stiff track. He is ultimately going to prove difficult to place, but he’s still in good form and is running well. He may return to Kempton next week in a London Sprint Series Qualifier, he finished fourth in this years final and it could well be a long term target for the end of next summer.
We may try him in a stronger bit on his next run just to give the jockey a bit more control as he is going to need to settle better than he did last week if hes to get home over six furlongs. High Point returned to Haydock last Friday, where he had won three weeks previously, but couldn’t match that run and only finished fifth, though he did have some excuses this time.
Ross Burdon Racing: High Point
The ground wasn’t as soft as he really likes, meaning the horses with more speed than him could pick him off easier than when he battled so well on soft ground a few weeks ago. This coupled with being unable to adopt his favoured front running style contributed to the poor run as hes very much a confidence horse, one that needs to feel in charge to show his best. With the ground now easing significantly hopefully he can return to that level of form on his next start, where we may step him up further in trip to two miles.
At Kempton’s evening meeting last night, Waistcoat attempted to follow up his very good run two weeks ago, when badly drawn, in the one mile handicap. This time we were drawn well, in stall four, but ended up being trapped wide throughout in a messy, stop/start race and could never get into the race, eventually finishing a poor ninth. Waistcoat’s next appearance will be at the Tattersalls sales ring next week, it will be a shame to see him leave the yard as he’s been a model of consistency since joining us, winning at Chepstow as well as being placed at Kempton and Newmarket in a number of good runs for the yard.
Ross Burdon: Dust Cover
Hopefully the week going forward will be a more satisfying week for us, starting with Dust Cover, who will most likely have ran by the time this goes live. Having not ran for almost two months he may need the run but should appreciate the softer ground that’s forecast at Nottingham. He needs to step up massively on what hes shown so far but I’m hopeful there’s a racehorse in there somewhere.
Ross Burdon Racing: Ernie’s Valentine
On Monday we have a huge day in terms of runners, sending one runner to Lingfield and two to Wolverhampton. Ernie’s Valentine goes to Lingfield and is reunited with Phoebe Edwards, who rode her first career winner on Ernie last month, in the opening seven furlong apprentice handicap. Being a previous course and distance winner I’m looking forward to seeing him run there, Phoebe got a superb tune out of him last time and if he runs to that level again he should go close to following up, his homework since Chelmsford has been very good and he seems in superb form at home.
Night Arc and Crest of Light will both travel to Wolverhampton for their evening fixture on the same day. Night Arc is new to the yard, having arrived from Brett Johnson’s a couple of weeks ago. He seems to have settled in pretty quickly and on pieces of old form would appear to be well handicapped if we can find the key to him.
He will run in the 1m1/2f apprentices hands and heels race, where he will be ridden by Alexandra Egan, who has impressed many with her riding since moving over from Ireland. Crest of Light steps up in trip to 1m1.5f for the first time, on a track hes won at in the past, hoping to put behind him a poor effort at Nottingham two weeks ago. Nicola Currie who rode him that day didn’t think he was giving his all during that race so Crest will be wearing a Visor for the first time on Monday.
