Trainer Ross Burdon starts his first full year with a trainer’s licence and settles into a new home in Sackville Stables. Read his latest update how he and fiancée Hollie plan their assault on the forthcoming year!
Ross Burdon Racing: Huge Plans for 2026
New year, new yard, same ambition. As we dive into 2026, we at RB Racing are looking forward to the year ahead and hoping to use what we achieved in our first year as a spring board to greater things this year, where we will be operating out of Sackville House Stables having moved in to our new yard this week. The new yard give us greater scope to improve our string and up our numbers, something we’re keen to do this year.
The year of 2026 hasn’t started exactly how we would have hoped so far. On New Year’s Day Mesaafi made the long trek north to Newcastle, a track he won at last winter, to contest a five furlong handicap, something I had been keen to do after his last few starts suggested he wasn’t quite getting home at 6f.
Ross Burdon Racing: Mesaafi
Mesaafi jumped and travelled well before coming under pressure a couple furlongs from home, although Paddy Bradley thought he was just starting to make a run when the eventual second crossed in front of him and caused considerable interference to Mesaafi, making Paddy snatch up and basically coast home from there. We didn’t really learn if he is quick enough for 5f on the all-weather and he will now have a break before getting ready for the grass season and his favoured summer ground.
Ernie’s Valentine returned to Wolverhampton last Friday but didn’t perform to his usual, consistent level, finishing fifth and never really threatening to get involved with the finish. It was a drop in form from what he had been showing recently and hopefully will prove to be a one off in his winter campaign.
Ross Burdon Racing: Saturn Seven
We’ve also ran Saturn Seven in the first week of the new year, although again, she didn’t show her best last night at Southwell. In both her starts for the yard she has been slowly away and even though we have done plenty of stalls work with her at home, she again missed the break and then, in an attempt to make up lost ground ran very keen and over-raced into the first bend, running keen and wide before running out of steam turning in. Saturn Seven needs to improve her start and learn to settle better if she is to show her natural ability, of which she definitely has.
Ross Burdon Racing: Beauty Generation
Moving forward with the rest of this week, tonight we head to Kempton where Beauty Generation makes his debut for not only the yard, but also for Crest Racing. Beauty Generation started life in Newmarket with Marco Botti, winning twice and placing a further five times before moving to Ireland where he was trained by Jessie Harrington.
He didn’t really shine in Ireland and we hope the return to the UK, being trained in Newmarket again and racing at Kempton, where he has shown his best form in the past, will bring about an improved showing from his Irish form. George Wood, who I feel rides Kempton extremely well, takes the ride and we would hope that BG shows something to give us something to look forward to for the rest of the winter.
Ross Burdon Racing: Waistcoat
On Friday Wolverhampton hold the first of the new Friday night race series aimed at student and young adults, and with such good prize money on offer they have understandably gained some strong, competitive fields. Waistcoat, who ran so well when finishing second at Kempton last month, drops in trip to 6f, something I was keen to do after his sectionals showed fantastic speed in his last race. The race looks very open but the horse is in great form and is we get some luck in running I would hope that Waistcoat would go very close.
