Ross Burdon Racing: Huge December 2025 Update

As many of blogs have, this one will start with Mesaafi. Mesaafi ran last night, at Kempton in a London Sprint Series qualifier, finishing fourth behind the winner Buccabay.

Ross Burdon Racing: Mighty Mesaafi

I was extremely pleased with the run, I had purposely left Messafi short of full fitness and for him to be beaten only two lengths was very pleasing knowing the run would bring him forward and hopefully put him spot on for his main target, the new Timeform Sprint Series final at Chelmsford in two weeks time (December 18th).

In four visits to Kempton Mesaafi has finished in the first four on each occasion, with two thirds and two fourth places, but, even taking this into account I don’t think the track suits him quite as well as the tighter all weather tracks. Hopefully the return to Chelmsford in a couple of weeks will help him show his best form and if he does he should have a solid chance.

Ross Burdon Racing: Saturn Seven

Last Friday evening Saturn Seven made her debut for the yard at Southwell, finishing ninth in a six furlong handicap. She was drawn widest of all in the stall 14 and much like she had done in many of her runs in Ireland, jumped quite slowly and missed the break, giving away plenty of ground right from the off. Alexandra Egan didn’t panic on her and let her catch up to the field, travelling quite strongly but enduring a wide trip around the bends and despite only beating one home, she was only beaten six lengths.

As she jumped slowly again, as she had been doing in Ireland, we will do some more stalls work with her and try and find a way to encourage her to jump on terms. If we can get that side of her races right there’s every reason to think she can be competitive from her mark as her homework is pretty good.

Ross Burdon Racing: Ernie’s Valentine

Over the next week we will only have a couple of runners, with Ernie’s Valentine going to Lingfield on Monday and Waistcoat having his first start since being bought back at the autumn horses in training sales.

Ernie has come out of his win at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago in great form, although he will have to improve again to maintain his fine record under Phoebe Edwards after the handicapper raised him three pounds to a new mark of 71, the first time he has been on a mark above 70 since midsummer. The pair have developed a great relationship together and hopefully they can keep up that form next week.

Ross Burdon Racing: Waistcoat

Waistcoat will have his first run in the colours of my own RB Racing Syndicate on Wednesday at Kempton. We bought Waistcoat back from previous owners at the sales in October, I feel that there is still some improvement to come from the horse and that, as he’s such a consistent performer, is the perfect horse for a syndicate as he can run relatively regularly and will generally give his running, meaning owners will nearly always get a run for their money.

He will come back down to seven furlongs from a mile, a trip I feel is his optimum and would be surprised if he didn’t run well. Hopefully he can run well and advertise himself on the track as he still has some shares available in him to buy so it would be nice if we can get some new people on board with him.

Ross Burdon Racing: Moving Day

In other news, off the racetrack, after Christmas we will be relocating, moving only a few hundred yards away to Sackville House Stables, previously occupied by Henry Spiller. The yard is bigger than our current premises and will provide us with scope to add to the horses in the yard and to hope to grow the yard and business.

As well as moving yards, we are also adding to the staff roster, with Phoebe Edwards permanently joining us after riding out occasionally and riding us two winners this year. She has been a great help to us since we got started and it would be great if I could help her take her career forward and hopefully provide her with some more winners.
