Glorious Goodwood 2024: A Comprehensive Guide to the Qatar Goodwood Festival

Glorious Goodwood 2025

Glorious Goodwood 2024 is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the summer programme and it takes place every year at the end of July or the start of August.  The five-day extravaganza begins Tuesday July 30th this year and concludes on Saturday 2nd August. There will once again be some excellent action to look forward to and one of the highlights will of course be the Group 1 Sussex Stakes.  We’ll preview Glorious Goodwood and take a good look at the potential clashes we have to look forward to, as well as some trainers and jockeys to follow.

Glorious Goodwood 2024: Day 1

Day 1’s highlight is the Group 1 Goodwood Cup over two miles and there’s every reason to expect a rematch between the first two home in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Aidan O’Brien’s Kyprios was a game winner on the day and John & Thady Gosden’s Trawlerman was a valiant second.

Perhaps the shorter trip can help the latter to bridge the gap, but Kyprios possesses plenty of class and tactical speed. A couple of Group 2 races strengthen the supporting card; the Lennox Stakes and the Vintage Stakes for two-year-olds, both over 7f.

Glorious Goodwood 2024: Day 2

Arguably the best race of the week, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, takes place over a mile and it’s the first opportunity for the three-year-olds to take on the older horses. Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner Paddington won the race in 2023 and it’s shaping up to be a cracking contest once again.

Queen Anne hero Charyn could line up against three-year-olds Rosallion, Notable Speech and Henry Longfellow. This will tell us who rules the roost in the mile division. There are a couple of Group 3s and some competitive handicap action on the supporting card.

Glorious Goodwood 2024: Day 3

Ladies’ Day provides us with one of the best races on the calendar for fillies and mares, the Group 1 Nassau Stakes. Bluestocking heads the ante-post market, with Opera Singer and Inspiral close behind.

The Group 2 Richmond Stakes for juveniles often produces some top performers and last year’s winner Vandeek went on to score at Group 1 level. Desert Hero provided the King and Queen with a Glorious Goodwood winner in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes and that’s also a race to look forward to.

Glorious Goodwood 2024: Day 4

Whilst there’s no Group 1 action on Day 4, the Group 2 King George Stakes provides some excellent compensation. Run over the minimum trip, this race has an illustrious roll of honour and awesome four-time winner Battaash is chief among them in recent years. There’s plenty of excellent handicap action and one of the most interesting events is the Goodwood handicap over an extended 2m4f.

Glorious Goodwood 2024: Day 5

One of the biggest handicap races of the season is the very valuable Stewards’ Cup and it takes centre stage on the Saturday. It’s a fast and furious event over 5f and is undoubtedly one of the meeting’s highlights. Group 2 action is provided by the Lillie Langtry Stakes over 1m6f and more valuable handicaps ensure that Day 5 isn’t to be missed.

Glorious Goodwood 2024: Key Trainers/Jockeys

Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore will always be a force at the big meetings and Goodwood will be no different. The pair were top trainer and jockey respectively at Royal Ascot and will be odds-on to go close once again.

Charlie Appleby had a quiet time at Royal Ascot, but there’s a strong chance he can bounce back at Goodwood, especially with the assistance of William Buick. James Doyle will have the backing of rising power Wathnan Racing and he could also be one to watch.
