The Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby is the first of Britain’s premier staying chase events of the new jumps season.

Charlie Hall Chase: 5 Famous Wetherby Winners

The West Yorkshire venue stages a key two-day meeting in late October or early November in which some big names of the jumps scene are certain to reappear. Here are five famous winners of Wetherby’s jumping showpiece.

Charlie Hall Chase Winners: Wayward Lad (1983 & 1985)

Michael Dickinson’s star was a two-time scorer around Wetherby in his decorated career that also brought big wins at Christmas via three King George VI Chase successes on Boxing Day at Kempton in 1982, 1983 and 1985. When he retired, his career earnings on the track were bettered only by the magical mare Dawn Run and he had tasted success at 16 different venues.

Charlie Hall Chase Winners: See More Business (1999 & 2000)

The horse that helped put Paul Nicholls on the map, See More Business triumphed in the Charlie Hall either side of the millennium celebrations. He also won a pair of King Georges at Kempton and, in ’99, the Cheltenham Gold Cup itself. His Ditcheat handler has gone on to become champion jumps trainer in Britain 14 times and See More Business was the star that started it all.

Charlie Hall Chase: Ollie Magern (2005 & 2007)

The most recent dual winner of the Charlie Hall Chase was the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Ollie Magern. He won the Grade 1 Feltham Novices’ Chase at Kempton in 2004 but Ollie Magern wasn’t feted for chasing stardom. Indeed, he only won four more times over fences after that, and three of them were around Wetherby.

He made all for Charlie Hall glory in 2005 and did it again two years later. An outstanding servant, he was second, third and fourth in three more attempts in the race and won a Perth Gold Cup in 2010.

Charlie Hall Chase Winners: Cue Card (2015)

One of the most popular horses of the 21st century, Colin Tizzard’s Cue Card triumphed at Wetherby at the start of a 2015/16 season that so nearly brought utter domination under Paddy Brennan.

They went on to win the Betfair Chase at Haydock and an unforgettable King George at Kempton, running down Vautour in the dying embers after Willie Mullins’ charge appeared to have the race at his mercy. At Cheltenham in March, Cue Card was attempting to match Kauto Star as a Triple Crown winner and was moving stylishly when he fell at three out.

Charlie Hall Chase Winners: Bravemansgame (2022)

The most-recent Nicholls-trained winner of the race and first under his current stable jockey Harry Cobden, now Britain’s champion pilot. Bravemansgame was 4-4 as a novice chaser in 2021/22 before running a poor race on his final outing at Aintree.

He responded on his comeback at Wetherby and would add the King George at Christmas before an honourable second as Galopin Des Champs won the Gold Cup in Cheltenham. He was pipped to the defence of his crown by the Mouse Morris runner Gentlemansgame in 2023 and is on track for another crack at the Wetherby showpiece in 2024.
