3 horses to follow at Newbury on Saturday: November 30
Day two of Newbury Horse Racing Coral Gold Cup meeting takes centre stage on Saturday afternoon.
The feature race sees only 14 declared due to the quicker ground than normal at this time of year.
We’ve provided analysis with selections for three of the races at Newbury on Saturday including a recent winner that looks capable of going in again.
3.00 Newbury Horse Racing – 3m2f Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)
This year’s renewal of the Coral Gold Cup has attracted only 14 entries at the declaration stage due to the dry spell of weather at the start of this winter.
One of the runners that will relish conditions is the six-year-old Victtorino whose career best effort came on good ground at Ascot just under a year ago.
That win came on the back of a wide margin reappearance success at the same track, so the 263-day absence isn’t a major concern and plenty of Venetia Williams’ horses have been winning first time out this campaign.
This son of It’s Gino has plenty of experience for his age thanks to a busy campaign in France when trained by Daniela Mele before joining Williams and the yard could hardly arrive in better form, running at a 33% strike-rate in the second half of this month.
There is possibly still more to come from Victtorino who didn’t get his ground at the end of last season and this could be the right time to catch him.
2.25 Newbury Horse Racing – 2m½f Coral Racing Club Intermediate Handicap Hurdle
Nicky Henderson has a remarkable record in the Gerry Feilden which is now a handicap but was won by the Seven Barrows maestro when it was a Grade 2 back in 1999.
He’s the winning most trainer of the race and has a great recent record too, winning three renewals since 2019. The trainer’s first string is Jeriko Du Reponet but he’s been pretty disappointing in his last two starts, pulling up at the Cheltenham Festival before a poor chase debut at Sandown recently, and he’s hard to put forward on the back of those efforts.
However, stablemate Aston Martini is a fascinating contender. This mare ran a massive race on her reappearance at Bangor and would have won that contest without a bad mistake at the final flight.
She won over this trip at Lingfield back in January and it’s possible that a drop back in distance will be ideal for her at this stage of her career. Quicker ground is fine and she looks overpriced, possibly due to James Bowen choosing to ride her stablemate.
3.35 Newbury Horse Racing – 2m½f Coral ‘Pipped-At-The-Post’ And Win Handicap Chase
The finale looks like a good opportunity for Petit Tonnerre to get his season back on track.
He went close on his reappearance at Aintree before struggling in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham, but a drop back down in class should suit and he’s still very well treated on his form from a year ago.
This doesn’t look like the most competitive handicap on the card and he’ll be better suited to good ground than some of his rivals.
