Hector Crouch was amongst the winners at Southwell on Thursday, riding a third treble for the month of January, and starts his weekend rides with two fancied runners at Wolverhampton this evening. Read his exclusive thoughts for kwiff ahead of this weekend’s rides.
Hector Crouch: Big Weekend Rides
It was nice to get a few more winners at Chelmsford on Thursday – it always helps when you land the opener, and that quickly became an opening double when Secret History obliged for odds-on backers in the Fillies’ Novice Stakes for trainer Ed Walker. Rogue Justice made it a treble later on the card, and could be one to stay on the right side of running over 2m Handicaps going forward.
HC Weekend Rides: Wolverhampton
On Friday I travel to Wolverhampton for two rides, starting with Cardinal Point (5.00) in the opening handicap over a mile and a half. The filly finally got a deserved success after a string of near misses here last weekend, and is officially well in under a penalty. She acts well at the track and is well-drawn to hopefully follow up accordingly.
Providing we see the ‘best’ version of Special Ghaiyyath (7.30) he would have a great chance in the feature handicap over an extended mile. He looks a potentially very smart horse when making a winning debut for the James Tate yard back in September under Clifford Lee. The market spoke in his favour before a disappointing when last seen finishing last a couple of months ago at Southwell. Providing he can bounce back, he still looks well-treated from a workable mark.
HC Weekend Rides: Lingfield
I’m at Lingfield for three rides on Saturday, starting with recent Kempton scorer Knight Templar (3.20) in the stayers’ handicap for the yard of Robert Stephens. I thought he did the job well that, with the race opening up nicely in the straight. The handicapper has raised him 3lb for that run but Lingfield should suit and he’s entitled to take his chance upped in grade. Fingers crossed he continues progressing.
Trainer Ed Bethell has his strong in good order and I ride his runner Atomic Force (3.55) in the sprint handicap. He’s got plenty of speed so the plumb draw in stall one might be ideal for him. If we can get out early, there might be an opportunity to gain a soft lead and do it from the front.
Naval Ensign (4.30) finished off well when scoring over 7f on his penultimate start and looks the type to bounce back in the finale. The yard of Jack Jones are another to be in good nick at present (3 winners from the yard’s 8 runners in the week) and the combination of a good draw anda first-time hood should see him bounce back.
