Classic winning jockey Hector Crouch continues on his way to a record-breaking tally for 2025; read his exclusive weekend preview ahead of rides at Southwell and Wolverhampton.
Hector Crouch: Weekend Preview, Nov 28th 2025
It’s been another good week, with the long trip to Newcastle made worthwhile by Darn Hot Gallop maintaining her unbeaten record and defying a penalty nicely last weekend. She knuckled down well and did it well, and will be a filly looking for black type next season as a 3yo I imagine.
We’ve been ticking along nicely since the return from the flat racing break, riding 7 winners from 20 rides and a win/place strike rate of 60%. I’d have taken that before the return! Fingers crossed there’s a couple more to add to it this weekend.
Hector Crouch: Weekend Preview (Friday)
My first ride at Southwell on Friday is Circe (3.15) who looks to have a bit to find in the Listed Golden Rose Stakes for trainer Richard Hannon. She ran well in this grade when fourth at Newmarket earlier in the season and was better than the bare result when down the field last time out at Doncaster. She’s a nice filly, and I’d be delighted to nick some black type for connections.
I was on board when Harry Charlton’s Tryfan (6.15) won around here near the end of September, and think he’s got a good chance following-up in the mile and a half handicap. He’s a nice horse and shouldn’t have a problem dropping back in trip, having won readily over a couple of furlongs extra. The form of that most recent run has worked out well and I think he’s still well-treated despite a 6lb rise at the weights. He has a very good chance.
Hector Crouch: Weekend Preview (Saturday)
I travel to Wolverhampton on Saturday for four rides starting with Charlotte Corday (5.00) in the nursery over the extended mile. She’s been a bit inconsistent in her four career starts but is bred to like the all-weather and was a good third last time on nursery debut. Her pedigree suggests she’ll like the step up in trip and is still unexposed from a relatively low mark.
Woodhay Whisper (6.30) did the job nicely in the week over course and distance and can hopefully defy a 6lb penalty in the 6f Handicap. She likes a good, strong gallop to aim at and needs to be delivered late on but is in good form and, providing she turns up with the same type of attitude, should be hard to beat,
We’re hoping first-time cheek-pieces do the trick with Cotiere (7.00) for connections in the 7f Handicap. She’s shown promise in maidens, placing twice, but struggled last time out at Kempton when failing to settle early and never really giving herself a chance. The trip and track will both suit and she can hopefully start to put her best food forward.
Ravens King (8.30) is a bit of a mystery but boats a profile of a likely improver on just his second start for trainer Eve Johnston Houghton. He probably needed the run last time out at Lingfield on his first start for nine months, and should have him strip fitter for this evening. He’s bred to appreciate the all-weather surface and is a likely improver stepping up in trip to a mile and a half.
