Classic-winning jockey Hector Crouch sits down with kwiff to discuss last week’s York Ebor Meeting, a fantastic August and a busy weekend with group racing from Sandown and Longchamp.
Hector Crouch: York Debrief
It was a bit of a frustrating time at York last week, with plenty of horses running well and not getting their head in front. I wa very pleased with the filly You Got To Me in The Yorkshire Oaks, with Aidan O’Brien’s filly Content reversing the form from last month’s Irish Oaks at The Curragh.
I was delighted with how my horse ran, with the Ballydoyle horse putting up an extraordinary performance, given just how hard she pulled during the race. The best horses came to the fore, and we were just beaten by the better horse on the day. I can’t wait for a rematch however, and hope we lock horn again, whether it be Britain, Ireland or France. I think You Got To Me gets the mile and a half well so could see her staying at that trip, but will leave that to the boss and connections to plan out her next steps.
Hector Crouch: Red-Hot August
August has been the best month of my career, and I’m grateful for the support showed by the Ralph (Beckett) and Michael (Bell) as the season continues. I rode a nice double at Goodwood on Sunday, and another at Epsom on Monday, including riding winners for the yards of William Haggas, Stuart Williams and Hughie Morrison. My agent continues to do a cracking job and August’s haul of 17 winners and counting is by far a career best. Long may the good fortune continue!
Hector Crouch: Weekend Rides
I ride two at Sandown on Saturday, in the televised group races, and both have excellent claims. Doha goes in the Gp 3 Atalanta Stakes and should be suited by the drop back in trip. She ran well in a warm renewal of The Nassau Stakes earlier in the month at Glorious Goodwood, and has come out of the race well. The 3yo will be hard to beat in reciept of 6lb, with Tamfana carrying maximum respect, but I wouldn’t want to swap my mount for anything else, and think she should go close.
I spoke glowingly about the manner of Matauri Bay making a winning debut a few weeks ago at Leicester, and think he has a terrific chance in the feature 7f Solario Stakes. He was an expensive purchase by connections, but looks a eally nice type, showing an impressive attitude to win well on debut. The form of that maiden success has worked out well (see the Convivial last week at York) and he should have further improvement to come. He’s a juvenile I like a lot.
Hector Crouch: Longchamp
Keep an eye out on Longchamp where I go to ride Stop the Cavalry on Sunday. The filly ran a great ran when not beaten far in a competitive Group 3 last month at Glorious Goodwood, and she should run well dropping down in grade. I’m hopeful she can come back home with some black type.
